Synopsis (via Lifetime)

A contemporary take on Michael Landon’s iconic 80s television series Highway to Heaven, Lifetime’s new event movie series follows Angela Stewart (Jill Scott), an angel who is sent back to earth to help others in need. In the premiere movie, Angela takes on the role of a temporary school counselor.

Recap/Wine Thoughts

Angela is an angel, literally, and also as a newly hired guidance counselor at a middle school. She is hired by the handsome Principal Bruce, who introduces her to a troubled 8th grader named Cody. Cody’s mother recently passed away, and he is causing trouble in classes. Angela goes above and beyond.

The meetings with Cody continue, and Angela learns about Cody’s closet with his mother’s things inside. She encourages him to look again, and he finds nine mysterious Christmas presents wrapped up. Angela earns his trust, and he opens up about his mother and even enrolls in math tutoring.

Angela shades the middle school garden while talking to Principal Bruce, confronts Cody’s dad in a grocery store about his wife’s death, and invites herself over for dinner. (Which indirectly inspires Cody and his father to think about opening the restaurant the family started to open when Cody’s mom passed away.) Angela’s behavior would typically be annoying/rude, but it is cool since she is an angel.

Principal Bruce decides to look into Angela’s resume and references and can’t verify anything. He is suspicious of her and agrees to go to the batting cages, and after he searches her place, and is surprised to see no suitcase or toothbrush. Something if off. Angela admits that she is an angel. Bruce thinks she is delusional and needs some therapy. He rushes off, confused as hell!

The following day at school, Angela laughs it off as a joke.

Cody enters into a robotics competition with Kia. (Who turns out to be Cody’s cousin, his mother had a sister who abandoned her when she got sick.) When Cody’s father finds out, he freaks out because the family secret has been revealed, but that is what angels do! Bring things to light.

Angela brings Cody’s father and aunt together to work out their differences. She also works on convincing Principal Bruce that she is an angel. First, she gives an impassioned speech, and when that doesn’t work, she manifests a Chicago Hot Dog. (I missed something here, it’s too random.)

It is ROBOT TIME! The school board shows up and praises Angela for working miracles with Cody. Cody is MIA at the robot competition because he and his father find letters from Melissa. She wrote letters to her loved ones before she died. The letters bring the family back together, and it wouldn’t have been possible without Angela.

Things are looking up until Cody opens his letter, and it is blank. Angela gets Cody to talk about his feelings and gives him a second chance to show his robot to the Math teacher. Cody gets a passing grade and is on the right track.

The restaurant gets a facelift and a name change. They call it Melissa’s, and Cody’s aunt agrees to help run the business. The thoughtfulness and sense of community touch Cody and his father.

Cody sits in the middle school garden with his blank letter and cries. Angela sits with him and tries to talk to him about his mother. She tells him that she is an angel and then fills the paper with his mother’s words for him, encouraging him to be the person she knows he is. It is a beautiful moment and very well acted.

Just as things look up, Angela is on her way to her next calling. This movie is called Highway to Heaven; after all, she has to hit the open road. Principal Bruce retires and puts his faith in God’s hands to lead him to what is next. He wants to partner up with Angela for her next angel assignment.
