Amber Dupont (Mowry) bites off more than she can chew when she takes charge of her church’s annual Christmas pageant and inadvertently promises to deliver a special performance by Motown legend Smokey Robinson. When her best friends secretly enlist Amber’s former flame Eddie (Taylor) to help, the pair reconnect in a quest to find Smokey and convince him to appear. With the clock ticking, family, friends, and superstar Smokey Robinson come together to stage the most special pageant yet.(2021)
Recap/Wine Thoughts
The movie starts off in Detroit (naturally) two weeks before Christmas. Amber is a single mother raising her foster daughter, Lily, in a religious household. Amber’s Aunt and widowed Father are trying to get a new roof for the Church and raise money with a Christmas Pagent.
When Auntie needs to leave town suddenly, Amber takes over planning the annual Christmas Pagent. Amber decides to include Motown into the event and promises to get Smokey Robinson randomly.
Smokey, unsurprisingly is not available, but Eddie works at a record label or music store and has connections. He is invited back to town by his brother., Ham. The only problem is Eddie and Amber used to date.
When Eddie comes to town, her takes Amber to a burger joint to catch up. Amber tells him about her social worker job and invites him to her house to meet Lily.
They decorate the tree together and help Lily prepare for the Christmas pageant. Eddie performs a version of “Noel.” (He sings well, actually!) it is the song that he performed in his first Christmas pageant and won the heart of Amber.
Amber and Eddie take Lily to the museum of Motown. They are hoping to run into Smokey himself and convince him to show up at the Christmas pageant. They just miss him as his limo drives away.
Lily and Amber bond like mother and daughter, but Amber gets a call about a family interested in adopting Lily. Eddie encourages Amber to follow her heart and lets her know that plans can change. They kiss, and Amber isn’t sure if they should date again after two failed attempts.
Just when things look like they might be happening for Eddie and Amber, Eddie gets a call. He gets a job offer to go on a world tour. Then he gets a meeting with Smokey, who isn’t available for the date of the Christmas Pageant, but he sings a little Christmas music with Eddie.
It is the night of the SOLD OUT Christmas Pageant. Amber makes a last min plea on social media to thank Smokey Robinson for all he has done for Motown. Smokey sees the video and shows up to sing “Silent Night” with Lily at the pageant.
After the show, Eddie tells Amber about the tour offer. He turns down the offer for love. Amber thinks maybe Eddie has been the one for her all along. She tells him that she is adopting Lily, and he is supportive of that decision. The church raised enough money to make the repairs. Amber and Eddie celebrate with a kiss.
