Synopsis (via Lifetime)

Leslie (Christy Bruce) is a busy event planner who recently lost her husband and business partner. Thankfully, her responsible teenage daughter, Ava (Keara Graves), is a huge help at home, keeping an eye on brother, Ryan (Cameron Brodeur), while Leslie works long hours. But Leslie doesn’t know that Ava is swiping Ryan’s ADHD medication, abusing the meds not only to help her excel at school but also to use them as a party drug with her new, dangerous friends led by Madison (Victoria Baldesarra). When Ava goes missing and is implicated in a hit and run that has put another teen in the hospital, Leslie must uncover all the secrets her so-called “perfect” daughter has been hiding from her if she hopes to bring her daughter home safely. (2022)

Recap/Wine Thoughts

The movie begins with a girl running for her life while on the phone with 911. A car is chasing her down and is driven by a woman in sensible heels. The girls gets hit, and we get the title card.

Flash to 8 days earlier, where we meet perfectionist Ava. She is an avid runner and constantly worried teen daughter of a successful event planner (and recent widow), Leslie. Ava cares for her younger kid brother Ryan due to her mother’s thriving business. She ALSO takes his ADHD medication to help her study. (I have a feeling we are heading towards a Jesse Spano “I’m so excited” moment.)

While Ava and her friend, Casey, study, they watch popular girl Madison dancing randomly with Wesley. Madison asks Ava to help her study for finals. REALLY she is after the pills and asks Ava to share with her. Madison spreads the work to her popular friends, and they start popping pills with Ava in parking lots.

Leslie becomes so busy with work she has to cancel on her kids to SCATTER THEIR FATHER’S ASHES!!!! Brad, the father/husband, drowned in a lake, and Ava found his body. The plan was to scatter his ashes over the lake. Leslie is concerned about her kids and thinks Ryan isn’t taking his meds because he isn’t. Leslie also tells Ava to chill out and stop worrying about school and grades so much.

Ava’s brother threatens to expose her when she asks him for more pills. She resorts to other sources, like asking her friend Casey to get drugs for them. Madison records the exchange. (For blackmail later, probably.)

During track practice, Ava pushes herself so hard due to the pills that she almost hyperventilates. The coach doesn’t notice anything is wrong because she is too preoccupied with Madison, her daughter, getting into college.

Ava goes to Xavier’s house and plays beer pong while Madison and Wesley do shows of vodka. (Damn, these kids really are in high school.) Madison asks Ava for more pills, and Ava tries to stand up for herself, but Madison shows her the video. Ava calls Casey for more pills and tells her that their reputations will be ruined if she doesn’t!

Leslie gets a call from the police and rushes to the hospital. She is surprised to find Casey in the hospital bed. Casey was found in the street in a hit-and-run accident with Ava’s cell phone. Leslie calls around to see if anyone knows where her daughter is. Xavier denies even seeing Ava the night before. (Even though she is passed out or possibly dead in his bathroom.)

Ava’s car is found, and it is suspected to have been used in the hit and run. Her missing person story makes the local news.

Ava wakes up on the bathroom floor and hears Madison, Wesley, and Xavier arguing. She tries to sneak out of the house.

We see through flashbacks that the popular kids started snorting the Adderall once Casey brought it over. It is all too much for Ava, and she cries about her dad. She blames herself for his death because he died after telling him she wanted to quit the swim team. Ava gets so upset that she runs outside and jumps onto the pool, and starts having a seizure. Casey runs to get help, and the popular kids chase after her. Things get out of hand (See hit and run.)

Ryan looks for information online and hears Ava’s laugh on one of Madison’s TikToks at Xavier’s house. It is proof that Xavier was lying to Leslie. Xavier thinks he is untouchable because he is the senator’s son.

Ava is captured before she can escape and tied to a chair. Madison is spiraling, and she convinces Xavier that he needs to “take care” of Ava before she ruins his father’s political career. Wesley doesn’t go along with it and works with Leslie and Ryan to help find Ava.

Madison and Xavier drag Ava’s unconscious body to the lake to make it look like she killed herself because she was upset about her father’s death anniversary.

Leslie isn’t far behind and tries to stop the teens on the dock. Madison screams at Laura to shut up, and Xavier throws Ava into the lake. Leslie dives into the lake and saves her daughter as the police pull up.

Six weeks later, Ava is off drugs and is rejoining the swim team for herself. Her friend Casey is on crutches and forgives Ava for involving her in everything. Ryan randomly plays the guitar, and THEN, EVEN MORE RANDOM, Leslie takes over for him, and everyone dances in the backyard. The end!
