Synopsis (via Lifetime)

When Assistant DA Darcy Young, is invited to her estranged parents’ country home to meet her sister’s new fiance, Thomas Schure, she’s already dubious at the speed of the whirlwind romance, but as Thomas’s suspicious behavior begins to become increasingly more erratic, Darcy becomes convinced that Thomas is a danger to her entire family. Olivia Buckle and Jonathan Stoddard star. (2023)

Recap/Wine Thoughts

The movie starts with a confrontation. Lindsay Hartley (Lifetime KWEEN!) screams at her husband, Tom, at his newly renovated office. Tom was taking a secret life insurance policy on her. (Those, typically, don’t go well on, Lifetime.) He gaslights her and charms her by explaining it is a good investment. Tom walks Lindsay Hartley to the office elevator and kisses her before pushing her down the elevator shaft.

Cut to a redhead chugging red wine, named Darcy. Darcy is stressed because her younger sister, Brea, is getting married before her. (Even though Darcy insists she is happy for her sister, she is not thrilled to see her family.) The assistant DA is on a beach vacation with her co-worker Amanda.

At the estate, Darcy is greeted by her housekeeper, Kristina. Kristina is hearing impaired and uses sign language to communicate. She is the one person who gets Darcy from home. In this scene, she bribes Darcy out of the car with a LOLLIPOP. (It did look good, TBH!)

Darcy’s southern ass parents and her sister Brea get to know the new fiance in a lush backyard. When Darcy joins them, Brea is overjoyed to see her sister and says:

“You look tired! We should get colonics later!” (This is negging, folks!)

Thomas Schure introduces himself and then snuggles up with Brea. He bonds with the parents, Douglass and Loretta, over Ivy League colleges, and they joke about the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania being a safety school. The men play fight, and it is deranged. Darcy watches in horror.

While Darcy unpacks, Brea tells her sister about how she met Thomas. (On a beach trip. They had sex on the Lifeguard chair.) Brea is happy because she is marrying a hot, wealthy lawyer.

Thomas knows a lot about Darcy because she is a high-profile lawyer who puts criminals behind bars. (Especially when he is rude to a catering waitperson.) Darcy is wary of him. She has every right to be because Thomas brutally stabs the waiter in his van for not calling him “Sir.”

Gratuitous shower scene with Jonathan Stoddard, because why the hell not!

Darcy calls her co-worker, who is still at the beach and shares her concerns. Amanda helps her look into things. She finds nothing in the police database but learns about an insurance scammer, Thomas. It is all circumstantial, but Amanda sends Darcy the files.

Loretta tells Darcy she is jealous of her sister and says, “Methinks thy lady doth protest too much.” (All while downing a bloody mary! ) Loretta even offers to pay Darcy her wedding fund to take a vacation or something. (Since they are paying for Brea’s wedding.)

Thomas walks into the backyard with a shotgun, and Darcy jumps up to protect her family. She screams at Thomas, but he laughs. (Thomas and Douglass are going hunting, duh.) Thomas cleans his gun while discussing justice vs. punishment. Then Darcy argues with her father about not joining the family law firm.

On the hunting trip, a co-worker of Douglass recognizes Thomas as Tommy, a young teen he defended. Thomas laughs it off again, but in his head, he fantasizes about shooting Earl and Douglass.

Thomas works out his anger by groaning in the front yard and slapping himself in the face. He calls his life insurance agent and tries to up the fire and home insurance. He taps his temples and says, “It’s okay,” repeatedly. Kristina witnessed the whole freakout. When Thomas learns that Kristina is a lip reader, he knows he must take care of her next. He syringes her while she cleans and makes it look like she has a medical emergency. Kristina tries to sign to Darcy, but Thomas holds her hands down.

In the middle of the night, Thomas steals Darcy’s phone and finds the files that Amanda sent. He puts her phone in a sink full of water and then puts it back on the nightstand. Then he envisions strangeling Darcy for fun! (This sequence is SO DRAMATIC!!!!)

Darcy can’t keep her thoughts to herself and tells her family about Thomas’s other wives, who he murdered for insurance money. Brea tells her sister to get over herself and chooses Thomas. Loretta and Douglass are so upset they drive back to the city. (To be clear, they aren’t upset the longtime housekeeper is dead!)

Thomas shoots Darcy in a dark house. She writhes on the floor, screaming, “I KNEW IT!” He tells Darcy about his other wives, who were all daughters of prominent judges, DA, and prosecutors who put away a notorious serial killer Thomas looked up to. He does his villain monologue, but no one comes to save her. Thomas shoots Darcy in cold blood and leaves her there to die.

Brea comes home and can’t believe how petty Darcy is being. She makes out with her fiance, but he stops her so he can take another sexy shower.

While he showers, Darcy wakes up. She has an MVP plaque she put in her shirt that stopped the bullet.

An insurance carrier drops off an insurance policy while Brea and Thomas are about to have a sexy time. She understands that her fiance was just using her. Thomas almost kills Brea, but Darcy saves her sister.

Thomas holds the sisters at gunpoint and shows them vials of poison that he used to kill Kristina. (Who is in a coma, apparently.) He knows that he shouldn’t use the same poison to kill them that he used for the maid.

Darcy sprays him with pepper spray and runs off. Thomas pistol-whips Brea and chases Darcy. He tells her that he will “carve her sister like a Christmas ham.” (Yuck! I hate, ham!)

The sisters fight with Thomas in slow motion, and as he goes down, Brea shouts,

“I’m keeping the ring.”

Loretta and Douglass show up and pull a shotgun on Thomas and hold him until the police arrive to arrest his ass.

One year later, Darcy works at her firm and plays chess by mail with her dad. A hunky law clerk helps her make the next move. He asks her out on a date. He is also Thomas’s brother.

Side Note

The Dad character was INSANE, and I LOVED it.

Kristina, the maid, DOES survive. (But can we stop having Black people play maids in the South, please? Couldn’t she have just been a childhood friend?)

This movie was very polarizing on Twitter (Which is trash.) and in IMDB Reviews. I would file this one under so bad it. isgood territory. The actors are SUPER committed and I loved that.
