Synopsis (via Lifetime)
Charlie Cunningham begs her mom, Amber, to let her switch from her small private school to a public high school, wanting to prove to her (and to herself) that she’s changed since being kicked out of school last year. Growing up without any luxuries, Amber works overtime as a doctor in order to give Charlie the finer things in life. It’s also her way of making up for her divorce two years ago, and she worries that Charlie blames herself for the separation. Amber is concerned Charlie will return to her old ways, falling into the wrong crowd and getting mixed up in drugs and alcohol, but she reluctantly agrees. The new school starts off well; Charlie receives good grades and praise from her teachers and joins the robotics team – until she falls in with the wrong crowd, starts abusing synthetic weed, and becomes a shell of her former self. Recap/Wine Thoughts
The movie starts with a single mother/doctor named Amber, who works late nights saving teens from overdosing. Her daughter Charlie is starting at a new school because she was bullied at her last school/had a drug problem, and continues to be ridiculed on social media. (I’d make fun of her because of her scrunchie.) Charlie doesn’t make new friends and quickly joins the robotics team. (which doesn’t help her case for popularity.)
Amber keeps Charlie under lock and key due to trust issues and her working nights. Amber is thrilled that her daughter is in a nerdy club and not falling in with the wrong crowd, as she did at her last school. The only problem is that the guidance counselor/Robotics club advisor, Andrew, seems inappropriate and creepy.
Brad and Lexi throw a party for the robotics club, and Charlie decides to go, even if it is triggering. Charlie spends the week with bad-boy hunk Brad and drinks too much. Matt (the good cute guy) shows up at the party and is concerned that Charlie is too messed up. He is right!
The next day, Matt tells Charlie about his friend Hannah, who committed suicide and is the OD girl from the beginning of the movie. Matt doesn’t want Charlie to feel isolated like Hannah did and reaches out, which is what you should do.
Charlie continues to be sexually harassed by Andrew and smokes synthetic weed with Brad to manage her stress. Charlie has a bad trip (if that can happen on weed?) and almost OD’s (If THAT can happen on weed?) The weed store tells her that she probably got a bad batch.
Amber finds the synthetic weed and gets a call from the guidance counselor; she is PISSED. When Amber confronts Charlie, they just scream at one another. Charlie cries to Brad and gets high with him; when he tries to sleep with her, Charlie shuts him down, and he gets angry. When she comes home after spending the night out, Amber finally grounds her daughter and sets up more sessions with the guidance counselor, Andrew.
Charlie starts to look into Hannah’s death and learns that she was also one of Andrew’s pet projects. He really starts asserting his authority over Charlie and manipulates her by “cutting her slack” and “doing favors” for her. He also touches her knee a lot.
After smoking like five packs of synthetic weed, Carlie passes out in an alley. Matt finds her and asks her what is going on. Charlie opens up about feeling isolated and alone. She also tells Matt about the creepy guidance counselor. Charlie turns him in after his solution for an argument with Lexi in Robot class is for them to hug it out slowly, while he watches.
The robot club is all pissed at Charlie for getting Andrew fired, her father cancels on plans they made, and she spills water on her computer. It is too much for Charlie, and she smokes a lot of synthetic weed and goes into an OD. Lexi drops her off at the hospital, and Charlie is put into a medically induced coma after headbutting a nurse.
Amber cries by her daughter’s bedside FOR A MONTH! Amber apologizes for not listening to her daughter when she needed her most.
A few months later, Charlie is out of her coma and in rehab for weed. She thanks her mother for always being there and listening to her, which is weird because that is the opposite of what happened. Then Matt shows up at the rehab to support his friend. The end!
