Recap/Wine Thoughts
Ashley is missing in the Rocky Mountains, and her mustached mount man boyfriend searches for her frantically. He finds her cell phone in the snow and screams, “ASHLEYYYYY!”
Ten years later, Carrie and Jared are heading on a vacation in the middle of nowhere. There is no cell signal and mountains all around—the ROCKY Mountains. Jared worries more about the restaurant he is opening than having a good time, much to Carrie’s disappointment.
The vacation home is MASSIVE but appears abandoned. No other guests or staff are onsite. The couple even have to check themselves in and pick a room. Jared is obsessed with the kitchen but misses the stove camera monitoring their every move.
The next guests arrive, and they turn out to be Jared’s friends from college. Wes, a travel writer, and his sister Lizzie are surprised to see Jared and seem to have a strained past. Jared is writing a piece on the new secluded resort but knows nothing about the owners or why the place is empty.
The final two guests arrive, and no one is happy to see them. Rayanne shows up thinking she is attending a fashion retreat. Harrison plans to meet up with a girl he met online. (But he is obviously getting catfished.) No one is happy to see anyone because of whatever happened the last time they were together. (The audience and Carrie are left in the dark.)
Once Harrison realizes his online girlfriend isn’t showing up, he attempts to leave. The gates are closed and locked. They are trapped inside. Some guests start to freak out, but Carrie recalls a large map she found in the area in the basement. They find an alternate way out and agree to leave first thing in the morning.
Jared cooks a meal for everyone and accidentally explodes the kitchen due to a faulty gas line. That doesn’t really matter because no one gets hurt. It does serve as a chance for everyone to admit what is going on.
The college friends explain to Carrie, a viewer, that they celebrated the end of college on a similar trip and that they were the ones who lost Ashley in the woods ten years ago. Like, to the day. The college friends speculate that Ashley’s mother may have arranged the surprise get-together.
After learning the news, Carrie storms off because she can tell that Jared is keeping something from her. Jared admits that Ashley didn’t just get lost on a hike. She was playing a game of one-upmanship that they liked to play in college called “One Loser.”
Flashback to college times, the friends are all partying and drinking vodka straight from the bottle. Ashley wages a game of Death Poker, and the loser will have to spend the night outside alone. Ashley loses the game and goes out into the night. Her friends lie to cover up why Ashley went missing.
The power goes out in the present, and Harrison goes to check it out with Lizzie. They find the phone wires have been cut, and Lizzie pockets a nail file for later. Once the power is back up and running, the college friends discuss why each one would be a suspect.
Harrison: Ashley was his girlfriend, and he could have taken the break up badly.
Wes: He is GAY and has connections to coordinate this elaborate travel scheme.
Lizzie: She is a tag-along loser who is secretly in love with Harrison.
Rayanne: Obvious Lesbian. She has financial problems, and her father is going through a high-profile embezzlement scheme.
NO ONE BLAMES CARRIE?!?!??!
Carrie feels uneasy being on the outside, but she doesn’t even know Jared is secretly texting with someone named “X.” He also slept with Ashley in college. When Carrie confronts Jared, he tells her to give him some time to think and goes off on his own.
Wes gets ready for bed and finds a note under the covers. Rayanne finds a Polaroid with the word “Killer” scrawled across it. She searches the house to find who left it and is then found at the bottom of the stairs. Rayanne is unconscious, and everyone decides to split up!
Wes and Carrie go to a barn to try and call for help. They see a figure and try to chase down the suspect. Meanwhile, Lizzie finds a gas tank in Harrison’s room leak CO2 into the house. For some reason, everyone takes a nap inside, except for Harrison who goes to chop some wood.
Jared also goes outside, but instead of chopping wood, he gets wood over Ashley. Who is ALIVE. They make out, and Jared has been having an affair. Ashley organized all of this so Jared will tells his wife it is over. They don’t have more of a plan then that; Jared hides Ashley in a room, until help arrives.
Lizzie can’t wait any longer and looks around the house for the internet server; she has GOT to post on social media. Lizzie enters the room where Ashley is being kept and freaks out appropriately. She calls for everyone to come down, and they are just as shocked.
Jared and Ashley explain why they did it through flashbacks. Ashley’s mother was sick, and her insurance could pay for life-changing treatments. Ashley hid with her mother for years and let her friends think they were responsible for her death.
EVERYONE IS REALLY UPSET!
Carrie has been putting things together on her own. Harrison orchestrated the reunion after he learned that
Ashley was alive and having an affair with Jared. His jealousy took over. Harrison also tried to kill Jared with the exploding stove.
Harrison makes his big getaway and takes Lizzie hostage. Jared and Harrison wrestle over Lizzie’s nail file, and Jared ends up stabbed. Carrie chases after Harrison to stop him from getting away. She ends up chopping him with an axe.
Jared’s nail file injury proves fatal. (Damn, it must have been sharp!)
Carrie runs out of the house crying hysterically. Good for her, it’s time to move on!
Side Note/Stray Thoughts
This felt VERY R.L. Stine Fear Street to me.
