Synopsis (via UPtv)
Katie’s family’s horse sanctuary is on the brink of closure, but in a last-ditch effort to raise the money, Katie must coax her reclusive grandfather, Bluegrass legend Ben Pendleton, back onto the stage for a Christmas benefit concert.
Recap/Wine Thoughts
The movie starts with some Country Christmas, or it might be Bluegrass… I don’t know the difference. We get shots of people playing instruments in the inner cut with horses running around the snow.
Kate (who has a head full of extensions.) and her parents decorate a Christmas tree in a horse stable. Some big cowboy-wearing, Mr. Breckenridge bully wants to race a horse named Chocolate and things get heated. He threatens to sue when he withholds a major donation that funds the Horse sanctuary. Katie REALLY fucked up. (The donation is for half their annual budget!)
Grant Breckenridge shows up the next day to pick up Chocolate and apologizes to his father. He asks Katie to go out with him for coffee to see what the problem is. They bond over a love of Bluegrass, and Grant suggests that Katie get her famous bluegrass grandfather to put on a concert to raise the money needed to save the horse sanctuary. Katie, her grandfather, gave up music when her grandmother died.
THEN KATIE JUMPS ON STAGE and sings “Wayfaring Stranger.” I love that song, and she isn’t terrible. Grant suggests that they headline the benefit concert together.
After some horse riding to think, Katie decides to plan the event. Grandpa and Katie practiced at her grandfather’s house, filling his house with joyful Christmas music. They start planning the event with their laptops in the horse stables and have to put together a proper band and come up with a name. They use her Grandfather’s band name.
We montage through setting up for the event and Christmas. Katie and Grant put up flyers, and for some reason, it pisses off her grandpa. I’m like, dude, you need to chill and let your grandaughter help her parents out. Where is all his money to keep the horse sanctuary? He gives Katie the number for a famous country music artist to use instead of his band for the event. Claire Crosby is in and will swing by while she is on tour!
The boys in the band get upset that a country star is not the big draw, and they quit because it should be about the music. It’s a lot of drama for nothing because Claire Crosby drops out of the lineup up too! Katie and Grant argue, and it looks like the benefit is over.
Katie gets her grandad to play again by stealing his favorite guitar and having him chase after her. She sings “Go Tell it on the Mountian” at him, and HE PLAYS AGAIN. Grandad puts the band back together. Katie apologized to Grant, and the concert was back on!
The benefit concert happens on the horse reservation, and Katie tells the crowd that Claire Crosby isn’t coming. People boo and walk out until Katie’s grandaddy jumps up on stage. They sing on stage, and the horse sanctuary is saved! Oh wait, they didn’t make enough money, LOL!
Grant shows up with a blank check or something, and he steals Hot Chocolate. They ride horses and hold hands. The end!
Side Note/Stray Thoughts
Okay, that happened! This movie should have told me less about horses and more about Bluegrass as promised!!!!
