Blair and Josh have been bitter rivals ever since they trained together at The Basic School in Quantico, where they were both at the top of the class, competing to be number one. After graduation, Blair got Josh’s dream job, and they haven’t spoken since. Three years later, their paths cross unexpectedly at the base holiday party, where the two get into an argument and cause a scene. As punishment, Blair and Josh are both assigned to Christmas Duty, where they’ll work through the Yuletide together…for 24 hours straight. They plan to stay away from each other, but when a snowstorm prevents all the Christmas presents from being delivered to base, they are forced to team up for a special mission…to save Christmas. Starring Janel Parrish and Parker Young.
Recap/Wine Thoughts
The movie starts with a cute animation!
We start off in boot camp, where Josh Cannon and Blair Birch compete to be top-dawg set to Christmas music. Blair is the top of the class and takes Josh’s spot, solidifying a longtime family rivalry.
Six years later, Captain Blair holds a training for her fellow officers. Her dad, Sargent Major/Dad, is in the audience. He tells his daughter she did a great job, and Blair tells him her BFF Zoe is staying with the family for the holidays. Sargent Major/Dad wants to put on a more traditional Christmas since Blair’s wife died. (No pizza for Santa or a Christmas hike this year. I like these traditions.)
There is a massive snowstorm coming to town, and Zoe wants to hit the slopes, but Blair can’t ditch her dad. Josh has a pregnant sister, a precocious nephew, and a father to take care of for the holidays, too.
Josh is assigned to Christmas Duty with Blair after a cake-wrecking incident with the incoming commanding officer. They try to get out of it, but they will be spending 24 hours together.
Meanwhile, the toys being shipped to the base have been delayed due to the road closure. Over half the kids won’t get Christmas presents.
Christmas Eve, Josh and Blair ditch their families and are on duty! (I have no idea what that means.) Josh blows up an inflatable Santa because he won’t waste his breath on talking to Blair. After they learn about the toys, Josh suggests they take a truck to retrieve the gifts and save Christmas.
The roads look pretty okay, actually. Josh jams to Christmas music, and Blair tells him she will “Deck his face” if he doesn’t stop. They share favorite Christmas memories, specifically skiing in Japan! (Which they both have done.)
They go shopping for toys, and Josh solves a Rubik’s Cube and plays in the aisles like a little kid, while Bair tries to shop. They do have fun tho! There is one last item they need to get from the back room and use their military skills to traverse an overly complicated recon mission. Blair falls, and they have a romantic “I fell on you” gazing moment.
Some setbacks slow them down, like a locked store that has the pink skateboard for the chief’s daughter, cleaning up the stock room after making a mess, and loading up the truck with USAA (#spon) volunteers.
On the ride back, Blair sings, and Josh is blown away by her average singing. Blair’s mom used to be an opera singer and taught Blair how to sing Christmas carols. Blair wants to sing to her dad for a Christmas present, along with fuzzy socks!
While delayed by a Christmas parade, Josh and Blair discuss past relationships and their philosophies on life. Then they slow-dance to the parade passing by, which isn’t romantic, but the sparks are flying.
They stop for gas but have to take a detour, where Finding Mr. Christmas himself (Ezra Moreland) has been relegated to running for his life after his Hallmark leading-man career stalled. He is outwitted by an adorable child at a Christmas party, where Josh fills in as the town Santa in exchange for gas. (Is that what happened?)
Blair takes a detour, and they run into icy roads. Then the truck breaks down! It is 3:45 AM! Josh’s sister, Amanda, happens to know how to fix it and can talk her brother through it. Josh just needs to ask for help! They get the truck running again and make it back, but they are late. Mission FAILED!
Blair falls on the sword and takes the blame, so Josh doesn’t get discharged. She realizes that Josh moved back to town not for his job but to be with his family. Blair can be reassigned somewhere else.
Josh dresses up as Santa to deliver the toys and make up for being tardy for the party. He gets his boss to go easy on Blair and to give her the promotion and keep her in town.
The family rivalry almost ruins the romantic reunion as the dads argue. Then a snowball fight breaks out, cutting the tension and helping them get over themselves and just have fun on Christmas. We get a late-in-the-movie snowball fight slow-motion montage.
The dads make up, Josh/Blair make up, and the kids get their presents! Merry Christmas to all!
Oh, wait. Janel Parrish sings “Silent Night,” and it is nice.
Side Note/Stray Thoughts
Janel Parrish is simply the best.
