Synopsis (via Lifetime)

Jennifer, Vanessa, and Evelyn meet as contestants on a reality dating show and suffer heartbreak under the spotlight. Their shared rejection sparks an unlikely sisterhood that carries them from Los Angeles to a new life in Seattle.

Recap/Wine Thoughts

The movie starts on a Bachelor-type show called Gentleman Suitor. Vanessa is a finalist, and her friends, Jennifer (Toni Braxton) and Evelyn, watch from the sidelines as the man picks the wrong woman! Vanessa is rejected live on television, and she is humiliated.

Jennifer and Evelyn help Vanessa pick up the pieces. They all went through a weird reality-show experience together and are now bonded. Vanessa hopes her reality star will fade, but everyone in LA wants to tell her their opinion on Jasper and his new fiancée.

Toni Braxton plays Jennifer, who is recently out of a relationship with a man who is polyamorous, fluid, and didn’t disclose that when they started dating. She breaks up with him, not for being into dudes, but for lying.

Single mother, Evelyn, doesn’t know what to do next. Her footballer husband died five years ago, and her son wants her to find love.

The friends do karaoke together, and Toni Braxton does Lil Kim. She is so funny, OMG. I love her. Then they do TLC waterfalls, and it is clear Toni Braxton has NEVER heard that song before. They decide to move to Seattle for a change of scenery.

After moving in, they are ready for a fresh start in their 50’s. Jason, Toni Braxton’s gay, sets them up with dating apps and tells them to get out there. Jason is not a housekeeper, or even a houseboy; he is a family friend who just goes wherever Toni Braxton goes.

Dating montage! (In person, none of the guys match their profile photos.)

Instead of meeting men on the apps, they meet their new boyfriends organically. Toni Braxton gets the hottest one, a hunk named Nathan with a Rolex. Jason is skeptical of Nathan because he watched the reality show.

Jason does some online sleuthing with Evelyn and finds out that Nathan has some posts online about him from a jilted ex. When they tell Toni Braxton, she isn’t concerned because Nathan already warned her about his crazy ex.

Evelyn and Jason stage a dinner and invite Nathan’s wife to join them. Toni Braxton is heartbroken that she has been lied to, AGAIN! Her friends help her… breathe again. (She has a panic attack.) The doctor at the hospital is HOT, and they invite him to yoga.

The friends play Scrabble and talk about failed dates. Evelyn starts yoga teacher training, Vanessa has hot flashes, and Toni Braxton is off dating but not having sex. Their bonding moment is interrupted by Jasper, who wants to pick Vanessa now and get to know her off-camera. Vanessa also has a rival architect who is flirty with her. So she has options.

Jasper uses dating Vanessa to garner more publicity. He even registers their names for a website. Vanessa decides to trust her instincts, and instead of being risk-averse, she takes a chance on the unknown and breaks it off with Jasper.

Evelyn has her first solo yoga class, and her son Will surprises her. Her friends called him to invite him because they know how important it is to her. Toni Braxton gets hit on by the doctor, and she tells him all her perceived flaws, but he is still interested.

Four months later, Vanessa is dating the architect guy and is pregnant. Toni Braxton is dating the doctor. At the end of the day, it is really about their friendship and supporting one another. Cheers!

STRAY Thought

This was the modern-day Golden Girls we wanted.

THEY DIDN’T PLAY THE SONG! (It was subtly underscoring some moments tho.)
