Recap/Wine Thoughts
Inspired by Actual Events
The movie begins with first responders rushing to save a teenager named Eric. His mother, Allison, is by his bedside and learns he was in an accident after joyriding and breaking a few ribs. Eric acts out after his father passed away. Allison was actually on a second date with a silver fox named Roger when she got the call.
Six months later, Allison is engaged to Roger, and her friend Laurie is suspicious. Roger has no family or friends, which is sus. Eric isn’t a fan of Roger either, isn’t thrilled about a stepfather, and can’t wait to leave for college! Allison promises Roger won’t replace his father. She needs to move forward, not move on.
Eric strums his guitar in his room with his girlfriend, Mia. She tells him he is jealous because it’s been just him and his mom for ten years. Eric isn’t ready for a new man in his life. Roger doesn’t even seem that bad, so what if he has an ambiguous job and likes hiking? Roger even has an electric shock hiking stick for “mountain lions.”
While hiking, Eric almost falls off a cliff and Roger grabs him, but pauses long enough to pull Eric back up, making Eric wonder, does my stepdad want to kill me?
Alli also has some concerns after Roger has a meltdown after seeing their wedding registry page. HE DOESN’T like social media! It’s not social media, Alison explains; it’s a website!
After going for a run, Eric is almost murdered while getting ready for a shower; he sees someone lurking outside and confronts them. The man is looking for someone named Carter. Allison also sees the man in his car, lurking outside. This leads to an annoyingly unnecessary nightmare sequence.
Roger takes care of the guy looking for Carter by luring him to a motel. Mia and Eric follow him and sneak into the motel office to get the reservation name. They bring it to Allison, and she is hurt that Eric was sneaking around to incriminate Roger; she would rather do her own research.
Allison and her friend look into the name Carter and learn he is dead in the river. Allison wants to talk to Roger directly, but her friend tells Allison to go to the police. Which she does, AND THEN she confronts Roger. Roger has an explanation for everything and seems genuinely surprised about the death of his motel friend, which is weird because HE KILLED HIM! Allison asks Roger to get on a Life360 app. Roger is reluctant to do so, but is he concerned about his work phone or his burner phone? (The one Allison finds in the laundry.)
The voicemail on the burner phone is actually Carter’s phone. Alison demands answers, and Roger blames Eric for killing Caleb?!? Roger tried to pin the whole thing on Eric, which is idiotic. Allison isn’t buying his lies.
She goes to the police, and they are on the same page and go after the con artist Roger. They use Life360 to track him down, but Roger put it on a trucker to mislead the police and breaks into Allison’s house. Allison uses that mountain lion hiking stick to take him down.
Roger is put away in jail, and Allison decides to take a break from dating. The end!
STRAY Thought
Wow, this was like a Wrong movie with no Vivica A. Fox, which is completely pointless.
I did like the lead and how she wasn’t falling for any nonsense, but I did not see chemistry between her and Roger.
