Synopsis (via Lifetime)

Groomed since she was a teen, a woman confronts the dark truth about her husband, the man she once trusted as her pediatrician. When another one of his patients is murdered just days before testifying against him, she must break her silence.

Recap/Wine Thoughts

1985: Teenager Shelley goes to the doctor after running in gym class and experiencing shortness of breath. The Doctor, Joe (Matthew Morrison), inappropriately compliments Shelley’s eyes during an eye exam, then invites her to a party at his place with other teens and their parents. Shelley’s mother, Jacqueline, is weirded out when the doctor tells Shelley he will give her driving lessons. It is time to find a new general practitioner! Maybe a female one?

Shelley keeps talking to Dr. Joe on the phone and meets up with him in secret. Jacqueline finds out quickly after her fifteen-year-old daughter moves in with Dr. Joe. Her childhood

Six years later, Shelley is estranged from her family and has two boys, fills in at the doctor’s office to help her husband, and is basically at his beck and call. Shelley notices teens her age coming into the office and leaving obviously disturbed. Shelly doesn’t want to believe the grooming she experienced could happen to other girls.

Sian, one of Dr. Joe’s patients, talks to her sister about what happened at her doctor’s appointment. The sister, Katie, shares that the doctor was inappropriate with her too. They sit down with their parents and tell them what happened. Word spreads, and Dr. Joe’s reputation finally gets out.

Dr. Joe tries to call Katie and Sian to convince them and their families to drop the investigation because it will ruin him. He becomes obsessed with stopping them from testifying. Shelley watches it all unfold, and Dr. Joe insists he didn’t do anything wrong. He calls an old friend, Brian, to take care of the sisters and scare them into silence.

Shelley has had enough after Dr. Joe comes home with an STI from a prostitute. Dr. Joe blames Shelly for not meeting his urges. She packs a bag and prepares to leave, but can’t leave her kids behind.

Brian’s plan is a little more than a scare, and a hitman is hired to take out Sian. It is a bad plan because it will undoubtedly lead back to Dr. Joe. The police arrest the hitman, and Katie is determined to testify against him. She eventually decides to cancel the hearing. The police start an investigation and tap his home and office phones. They also start trailing the family’s every move. Dr. Joe decides they need to move to Greece.

Through the surveillance, the police hear the horror that Shelley suffers behind closed doors. They want to intervene, but they want to wait for him to admit to something. Dr. Joe realizes that Shelley could easily destroy his reputation simply by telling her story.

At her breaking point, Shelley calls her friend Beth and wants to escape. She rushes out with her kids, leaving him and his apology flowers behind, hopefully for good! Beth takes Shelley to a women’s shelter, and they talk to the police. She agrees to go into witness protection in exchange for her testimony.

Dr. Joe is arrested and taken into police custody. Shelley testifies against him in court, and the case sparks public outrage. Shelley shares the abuse and manipulation she faced. Then Dr. Joe takes the stand in his own trial, which is never a good sign. Dr. Joe is found guilty, and Shelley is STILL in witness protection.

STRAY Thought

Matthew Morrison is actually a decent guy! I’ve met him for work, and there is a definite unfair conflation of his real-life persona with his Glee characterization.

Based on a True Story

• Grooming and Marriage: Dr. Charalambous, an enigmatic black belt karate expert, used his position of trust to groom a 15-year-old patient named Shelley Joel. Despite the extreme age difference and ethical violations, he brainwashed and isolated her, eventually coercing her into marriage as soon as she reached legal age. Shelley lived under his abusive control while he managed a severe sex and gambling addiction.

• The Allegations: While married, Charalambous continued to abuse his power, targeting other young female patients. Sisters Katie and Sian Simmonds filed a regulatory complaint with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of B.C., accusing him of severe sexual misconduct and sexual assault.

• The Murder: Fearing that their upcoming testimonies would completely destroy his medical practice and strip him of his license, Charalambous openly told his young wife he would silence the sisters. In 1993, he hired a hitman named David Schlender. Schlender broke into the home of 19-year-old Sian Simmonds, shot her twice, and beat her to death with a pistol.

The Aftermath & Legal Fallout

• Conviction: In 1994, Dr. Josephakis Charalambous was convicted of first-degree murder and conspiracy. He was sentenced to life in prison without the eligibility of parole for 25 years.

• Institutional Failure: The case caused a massive public outcry in Canada because the College of Physicians and Surgeons repeatedly procrastinated and failed to strip Charalambous of his license despite years of escalating complaints regarding his highly inappropriate conduct with minors.

• Parole Denials: Charalambous, now in his 70s, has repeatedly tried to secure freedom. The Parole Board of Canada denied his latest parole bid in January 2025, after psychological risk assessments determined he still poses a moderate risk for future violence and exhibits an unsettling “sense of entitlement”.
