Synopsis (via Lifetime)
Ten years after disappearing, Matt mysteriously returns home. Suspicions grow when Matt’s brother is injured in a car accident similar to the one that recently killed their father. Is Matt really the missing son or a deceitful stranger?
Thoughts
A family annoyingly sings “This Old Man” on the car ride to the beach. Sarah and her husband, Jake, drink wine on the beach while their two sons play Marco Polo (or “Marco Angelo” as the brothers say) in the water. One of the sons drowns in the water. RIP whoever!
Ten Years later, the remaining son Ian is getting married, and Jake died in a car crash. At the wedding, Sarah notices a strange man on the dance floor. She goes home alone and notices an intruder has broken in. Sarah calls the police and then pours herself some much-needed wine. Later the next night. Sarah sees the man looking in her window. He claims to be her dead son, Matt.
Matt claims to have lost his memory due to oxygen loss. He saw Sara’s face on a billboard, and his memory came flashing back. (She is a realtor.) Sarah takes his word for it and invites him to stay. (It is a Lifetime movie, after all.) Sarah introduces Matt to his brother and new sister in law.
The topic of Jake’s estate comes up, and Matt asks if he is entitled to anything. It raises red flags for Ian’s wife, and she hires a private detective to look into Matt’s past. Ian also has suspicions and tells his mother to be careful. Ian’s wife finds nothing and tells Sarah that things aren’t adding up.
Sarah isn’t careful. Sarah asks Matt to take a DNA test (He passes,) and he gets angry and takes a hot steamy shower to reveal scars on his back. Matt comes up with a story about his foster family who raised him, and he gives her a number to call. The woman on the other line is Sarah’s friend Jessie?!?!
Ian confronts Matt about not having a history online, in school, or even a bank account. Matt shames them for their privilege and says he has been off the grid. (Which is idiotic.) Enraged, Ian drives his car recklessly and gets into an accident. The car accident is eerily similar to Jake’s, and Sarah begins to look into things herself.
Matt helps take care of Ian and carried him to a bath. When Ian’s wife steps away, Matt takes his opportunity to let Ian slip under the water. Ian is pulled out when his wife re-enters the room. Ian is convinced that Matt is trying to kill him. Little does he know, Matt is watching him and his wife have sex. Matt also looks at Sarah’s cleavage.
The DNA test results are found to be faulty and have to be redone. When Sarah calls the number of Matt’s foster mom, the number is disconnected. Ian also quizzes his brother on the game they played when they were kids; Matt doesn’t remember.
Matt and Jessie meet up in a cabin in the woods. Ian’s wife is onto them, but Jesse ties her up. Sarah heads to the house and sees what is going on. She realizes that Matt is named Jonathon, and Jessie abducted the REAL Matt. They told him that his parents were dead and have kept him in the cabin. It turns out that Jessie was in love with Jale and stole his son to have a piece of him. Johnathon and Jessie killed a lot of people.
Ian’s wife frees herself and calls 911, but is put on hold? The real Matt and the imposter Matt fight it out while Sarah and Jessie also struggle in the yard. The real Matt gets the gun and screams at Jessie to tell him the truth. Sarah convinces the real Matt that Jessie killed his father and stole him. The Sarah shoots Jessie in the should and says “I guess you chose the wrong son.” JK, she says “Stay away from my son.”
Jessie and Fake Matt are arrested. Sarah brings the real Matt home and promises to make it up all the years she missed with him. She welcomes him home and he see his brother and says “Marco… Angelo!!!” They actually look like brothers and I love this ending. I think I have to go call my brother now.
