Synopsis (via Hallmark)
An antique seller and a cleaner clash over how to downsize a magnificent estate right before Christmas. As the two uncover the house’s treasures, they find a way to reconnect the reclusive owner with his own Christmases past.
Thoughts
Gwen has a job that I can’t quite pinpoint. She might be in real estate, event planning, decorator; it doesn’t matter. We learn that Gwen was ditched at the altar on her wedding day!!!!!! Gwen meets with Mr. Hawthorwn, who hires her for her next job. Auctioneering? Oh, she is also going to decorate the house for the holidays. I think she might be up for promotion too. (Yikes, this is confusing.)
A commercial cleaning company run by Veterans called Dirt Force is run by Gwen’s ex-boyfriend named Reed. They do not get along at all. Reed and his crew of veterans. (Including a vet who uses a wheelchair.) clean the estate. Gwen goes through items and accesses their value. They all decorate together. It isn’t very compelling or engaging.
There is a b-plot romance with Mike (the vet in a wheelchair) and Vanessa (a barista) that is more interesting. Could we watch that movie instead?
Reed and Gwen pick out some Christmas trees for the estate and argue about which one to pick. They talk about both being only children and about Reed’s post-military life profession. Reed’s parents recently passed away, and he is having trouble with the holiday season. They decorate while talking more, but not Gwen and Reed seem to be getting along better. They go to a holiday party together, and who cares: Mike and Vanessa kiss under the mistletoe. They are vibing! Yay!
The next thing of note is that Gwen and Reed make “Smore people.” It is terrifying.
The auction happens, and Gwen can’t sell a sentimental tree topper. It is too sentimental, and she wants to save it. To add insult to injury, Reed takes a job in California and expands his cleaning business.
Mr. Hawthorwn’s daughter comes home for Christmas after years of staying away. They throw a party full of family traditions. He invests in Gwen and gives her the “keys to legacy.” This might have meant something if I didn’t spend this whole movie wondering what Vanessa and Mike were up to.
Reed decides to stay in town after all and make a go with it with Gwen. They kiss.
Mike and Vanessa are going to take a vacation to California to start the business and a LIFE TOGETHER!
Side Note
Minority Report: Sienna, Mike, Tucker, auctioneer
Mike is played by athlete Joshua Cassidy, who is a three-time Paralympian.
