Synopsis (via Lifetime)

A high school senior becomes determined to uncover her new classmate’s true identity as strange events take place at their school. (2021)

The movie begins with a blonde in a prom press burying a cute boy.

Cut to Nicole and her boyfriend with a cute butt named Liam. Nicole is susceptible to being influenced because her father cheated on her mother. Her friend Cass and Angie place doubts in her mind about her boyfriend cheating on her causing Nicole to create a fake “Flashback” account using the name Heather Harris. Cass and Angie are impressed with Nicole’s manipulation; it doesn’t last long because Liam apologizes and passes the test.

Angie decides to message her boyfriend and Cass’s boyfriend, Issac. Derek passes, but Issac doesn’t. Cass is heartbroken and breaks up with Issac dramatically. Nicole decides to delete the just_heather account. Two Months Later. Heather Harris enrolls in their high school. The catfish is a REAL PERSON?!?!

Heather Harris walks around quoting the profile to Nicole and Angie, which is creepy. Issac is excited that Heather Harris is real and shoots his shot. Heather Harris tells him he is a bad guy and will get his. (He does later and is run over while skateboarding. Unfortunately, he survives.) It turns out that Angie loves drama and has kept the profile open. She has been catfishing for girls all over the city.

Angie slaps the shit out of Heather Harris, and that is the wrong thing to do. Heather Harris makes moves on Liam and shamelessly tries to steal their men… or high school boys. She even wins over Nicole’s mother, who works at the school as a journalism teacher. Nicole tries to tell Liam what is going on, but he breaks up with her because she comes off a bit cray cray.

Heather goes home to her mother, who is utterly disappointed in her daughter. Heather re-does her dream board and crosses out her real name, “Jenny,” and writes Heather over it. Then she places a picture of Liam on the board and harasses Nicole via social media and IRL.

After Nicole’s paper is deleted and an expose is published under her name, revealing her mother’s affair with the principal. We get a montage of shocked faces.

Then Angie is at cheer practice, and Heather Harris drugs her water. Angie ends up in the hospital, and I guess she is in a coma. Pills are found in Nicole’s locker, and it seems that she is responsible for Ange’s drug overdose. Nicole is suspended, but not before hacking into the school files and copying Heather’s address.

A house break-in quickly follows, and Nicole searches for answers in the home. Nicole runs into Heather/Jenny’s mother, who is very drugged up. Heather/Jenny catches them talking and grabs a shovel. She hits herself in the face and claims Nicole assaulted her.

Cass realizes that things have gone too far and admits that she helped Heather Harris get into their school and falsified her school records. Cass is messed up; Angie in a coma didn’t cause her to come forward???

Heather/Jenny seduces Liam while he is playing basketball (With his shirt on?? I’m confused.) She plays dumb and has him help her shoot a basketball; then they kiss while she video records the kiss and sends it to Nicole. Heather/Jenny asks him for a ride home and knocks him out with a baseball bat. (So many sports.)

Cass and Nicole track Liam’s unconscious body deep into the woods. He lays by a grave similar to the one we saw at the beginning of the movie. Heather/Jenny is there with her shovel and takes Cass out. Then she goes into her villain monologue; she did it all because the catfish ruined her relationship with Troy. Heather/Jenny argued with Troy and accidentally pushed him down the stairs.

Nicole records the whole conversation, and then they struggle over the shovel. Nicole’s mom comes to her rescue, and everyone is saved. (I kind of think Nicole is in the wrong here and did ruin someone’s life.)

Payback is a bitch because Heather creates a catfish account as Just_Nicole in prison. The end!
