Synopsis (via Hallmark)

Julie is adjusting to being a single mother to a grieving child while facing her first Christmas without her husband when she develops an unexpected friendship with her older neighbor Irene.

Recap/Wine Thoughts

Julie and her son, Gavin, just moved to a new town. She has got a case of “Mom Brain” (Like leaving Peanut Butter in the toaster.) and is constantly on the go with her business (Sticks + Stones) and dealing with the loss of her husband. (Cancer. )Julie hasn’t even had time to introduce herself to her neighbor, Irene. (She is a local do-gooder and prolific baker.)

Gavin gets dropped off at a Christmas day camp, and Julie promises to make this Christmas just like the ones while his father was alive. Julie is not one to take help when offered, and the business is struggling.

Percousious kids ALERT! We see the Christmas Camp, and Irene is one of the counselors leading the kids in Christmas songs and holiday cheer. She charms Gavin right away,

Julie doesn’t get a big account and goes into a bar to drown her sorrows with a latte with an extra shot of espresso. Peter, the bartender/owner, tells her that he is practically a therapist and lets Julie vent to him. They get to talking, and she takes him on as a client to redesign his restaurant.

Gavin introduces Irene to his mother, and Julie invites Irene to help decorate the Christmas tree. Irene is very excited for her grandson, Miles, to come home for the holidays, and she gushes to Julie about him.

Julie and Peter go over her plan for the Bar reno. Peter shares some memories of the place, which used to be owned by his father. Specifically, a clock that doesn’t work that belonged to his grandfather.

Irene helps Julie take care of Gavin when she loses track of time. Irene relives her favorite memories of her grandson. Then he calls to tell her that he won’t make it home for Christmas. Irene and Gavin talk about their feelings, he opens up about his father’s death.

When Peter finds out that Julie is putting off family obligations, he pushes the reno date. Julie rushes to spend time with her son and is upset to find that he has opened up to Irene instead of her.

On their way to do the traditions that Gavin and Julie did with his father, Gavin admits that it is hard for him to relive those memories. They decide to make new memories and go see Irene’s magic show. After the show, Julie apologizes for her behavior. Irene is understanding.

Irene invites Gavin and Julie to help her create Christmas gift baskets for military families overseas. Irene quickly takes over babysitting duties, so Julie can go to the bar’s re-opening.

Peter’s bar opening goes so well that Julie gets her more business owners interested. She gets a lot of business cards and decides to use those contacts to help get Miles home to his Grandma for Christmas.

Meanwhile, Irene shows Gavin a special box she made for Miles when he lost his mother at a young age. The box is full of memories and is a way to remember someone without everything serving as an unwanted reminder. Gavin decides to make his own box and give it to his mother for a present.

In the final 10 mins, things finally start happening!

Gavin gives his mother the memory box and is very touched by his thoughtfulness. Irene is also overjoyed when Miles shows up and surprises her.

They all share a meal around the table full of love and laughter. Peter is just kind of there too. Whatever!

Side Note

Oh man, this one was boring! I can appreciate the heartfelt earnestness but is this movie a romance or family drama. It didn’t really succeed at either.

Minority Report: Irene, Miles, Peter,
