Synopsis (via Lifetime)
Julia Wilson (Lee), an accomplished pastry chef from Chicago, heads to a small town bakery famous for their gingerbread to complete her Christmas cookbook. There she finds herself at odds with Kris Thompson (Bisson), the bakery’s charming but private owner, who is ambivalent about sharing his secret recipe.
Recap/Wine Thoughts
Julia is a Chicago baker looking for the best Gingerbread Christmas cookie with her co-worker AJ. She is also writing a new cookbook and is on a tight deadline from her EXTRA boss, Delphine. Julia doesn’t want to publish without the gingerbread recipe that reminds her of her mother’s lost recipe.
A cookie comes in from Homestead Bakery in Hampton Grove, WI. Julia thinks it is perfect and rushes to the small town to meet the baker responsible for the cookie.
Kristopher is a single father running a struggling bakery with his mother, Irene. He doesn’t remember sending a basket of cookies to Julia and is hesitant to give over the recipe. They make a deal that if Julia can raise the sales for the bakery by 50%, she can use the cookie recipe in her book.
Julia comes up with a business plan. Keep the classic items and add a new twist! She also comes up with a marketing idea called the 12 Treats of Christmas that will all feature the Gingerbread recipe. Before coming up with the ideas, Abby talks the grown-ups into playing “Snow Wars.” Snow Wars is like hide and seek, except you can throw snowballs and stuff.
Julie gets a connection with a local radio station and has Kristopher read an ad live on air, and even gets him to sing. They drink hot cocoa, and Julia shares why she really wants the recipe because it reminds her of her mother’s cookbook. Kristopher sees her less as an opportunist and more as a person.
The marketing works and many people in the town visit the store. They are all intrigued by the 12 treats of Christmas and can’t wait for the next day’s treat!
The days go by and include fudge, Donuts, Hot cocoa, cream cheese bars, cake pops, and more. The sales are continuing to grow, and Kris wants to know if they are hitting their sales goals. They are just short, so Julia comes up with an idea to boost the final day of sales.
Kris does MORE marketing; he nervously goes on the local news and talks up the final treat. Gingerbread cookie sandwich.
Del calls Julia to tell her that she needs the recipe right away, causing Julia to take a photo of the recipe, and plans to leave suddenly for a book meeting. Irene catches Julia and tells her that the recipe means more to Kris than he has let on. It is special because he used to bake with his wife, who died.
Kris tells Julia that he is starting to have feelings for her and hasn’t opened up to anyone like this before. Julia interrupts and tells him that she needs to leave; Kris thinks she cares about getting the recipe, not his family.
Irene comes clean about sending the original basket into the competition and says she MAY have stolen the recipe from Julia’s mother in a cookie exchange. Kris rushes off to stop Julia from leaving to tell her what he has learned.
While she drives back to Chicago, Julia hears the commercial for the bakery and turns around. Kris and Julia reunite at the bakery and talk things through. Julia offers to remove the recipe from her book because his family means so much to her. Kris tells her that sharing recipes is what makes them special.
They kiss passionately and are interrupted by Irene, who shows them a packed bakery. The TV spots worked! Julia decides to skip her meeting and help sell baked goods. She might stay in town a lot longer than anticipated.
Side Note
I like Cory Lee; I don’t think she has a lot of romantic chemistry with the male lead.
