An animal expert answers a call for help from an old friend, and that puts her in the path of an ex at Christmas.
Recap/Wine Thoughts
Recap/Wine Thoughts.
Juniper Jones is a keynote speaker at high-end fundraising events. However, she is an introvert who would rather be with marine life and her best friend, Candice. Candice was Juniper’s roommate in college and introduced her to her brother Sawyer. Sawyer and Juniper met at Candice’s wedding and had the most romantic night of their lives together. Circumstances kept them apart, and they hadn’t seen one another for ten years until now!
Sawyer is very popular in time and overcomes his time to help others. He has no time to focus on dating and is excited/nervous to hear that Juniper is coming to town.
When she gets to town, Juniper stops at a cafe to charge her phone and runs into Sawyer, who is hiding behind the service counter. He gives Juniper a ride to the aquarium. It is an awkward conversation the whole way. Sawyer realizes that Juniper will be staying with him and his sister in their house. (Well, the guest house in the back. It has its own Christmas tree!)
In the aquarium, we see dolphins jumping and penguins waddling. Candice introduces Juniper to a seal named Peppermint and three undergrad interns (Eric, Peter, and Thresa) who are obsessed with Dr. Jones. Juniper is nervous about mentoring but reluctantly agrees to do it. She is more comfortable talking to Peppermint, the seal. Candice wants Juniper to work at the aquarium full time.
Sawyer works at a pizza place and brings a box of “Christmas pizza” home for Juniper. To overcome the awkwardness, they play the questions game. We learn that Juniper spends Christmas in a new place every year. Her parents are divorced, so being home for the holiday is hard to define for her family. Just as they are starting to reconnect, Sawyer gets called away for a pizza emergency.
The Christmas boat parade happens, and this tradition doesn’t televise well. I’m sure it is astonishing in person. Then Juniper and Sawyer do family things with Candace and her daughter. (Who is just as socially awkward as Juniper!)
Juniper starts to feel more comfortable with her interns and in town. She agrees to fill in for Candice at a town hall. Juniper gets signed up to be a flyer for the town and has a slew of other responsibilities. Sawyer takes Juniper on a tour of the town as they canvas it. Juniper asks Sawyer why he doesn’t travel more, and he explains her wants to be around while his niece is young.
Eric and the town baker have a crush on each other, oooo gay romance alert!
Peppermint gets sick, and Juniper runs some tests to figure out what is going on. She stays at the aquarium for two days until her interns send her home. They have her back, and that is nice!
Sawyer becomes upset when Juniper drops that she is going to South Africa after the holidays. Juniper explains that the right man for her wouldn’t ask her to stay in one place. He agrees, and they make a date, but Juniper cancels last minute due to a peppermint emergency. Sawyer responds with a thumbs-up emoji because he is disappointed and doesn’t know what to say. They try to talk it out but fight about their different Christmas/Life philosophies.
Jolabokaflod, Junniper’s favorite Christmas tradition from her travels, brings them back together, and we get a book-shopping montage. Oh boy! After opening book gifts, they read by the Christmas tree. Juniper and Sawyer talk about the first time they had a romantic connection, and he admits that he didn’t send the email because he was scared of how much she meant to him.
Juniper realizes she is falling for Sawyer and tells Candice that she is declining her job offer. Candice knows that she is running away.
It is the aquarium toy drive, and it is the most successful one EVER! (It must have been the flyering!) Candice’s daughter Louisa reads a Christmas poem. Then they do a Christmas around the world tribute or something and it touches Juniper so much that she decides to stay and take the job at the aquarium.
Sawyer is happy about the news, but he is leaving town?!?! They make out.
The movie flashes to next December, and Sawyer is back from his travels. They just ib the boat dock; I just want to see the seal again, WAY underused,
Side Note/Stray Thoughts
Peppermint was played by a seal named Cork! Like Lifetime Uncorked? I think so.
The dialogue in this movie was VERY corny. Props to Jessy Schram for making it work, but damn, not doing her any favors.
The Christmas pizza actually looked kind of yummy!
Apology calzone is the way to say sorry to me, just FYI!
