JJ, grieving the loss of her grandmother and seeking dissertation inspiration, stumbles upon an unexpected holiday destiny. Meeting Henrik, a Norwegian from Bergen, their connection deepens when he discovers she has a troll figurine from his hometown. To explore the troll’s history and her grandmother’s ties, JJ agrees to join Henrik on a journey to Norway. In Bergen, they’re drawn into Henrik’s family Christmas and wedding traditions, with his sister’s wedding the day before Christmas Eve. Recap/Wine Thoughts
Jessica Johnson grades papers while watching a Norwegian hunk getting broken up with by his girlfriend, who has the same name. Jessica felt sorry for the guy until he spilled her coffee and sent her papers flying everywhere. JJ forgets one of the papers, and the hunk finds her school and brings it to her. Freaking her out.
On JJ’s desk is a troll from Norway that belonged to her grandmother. The troll inspires him to invite her to fill in for his Jessica Johnson for a trip to Noway. He leaves his name and number and tells her he will see her tomorrow.
JJ is not into the idea until her boss insists she go and finish her dissertation. Inspired by her grandmother’s troll, JJ flies to Bergen with Henrik. They take the Bybane Train together, and JJ is set on ditching the hunk ASAP. Until she realizes she is in a foreign country and doesn’t speak the language or know the culture.
Henrik brings JJ with him to his niece Mia in a Christmas recital. (Because the first thing you want to do after a long flight is a child singing.) His sister Nora is horrified when she learns JJ is staying at a terrible hotel and insists she stay with their grandmother, Astrid.
JJ looks around the local shops and asks about the troll that belonged to her grandmother. She runs into Henrik, and he walks with her. Strangers stare at him, and some guys bump into him and call him a “Quitter!” angrily. These same boys continue to bully him around town.
Henrik was a world-class downhill skier, and he was badly injured at worlds. His leg no longer supports him, and he is seen as a national disappointment.
Does JJ go wedding dress shopping and help plan a bachelor party? She is really immersing herself.
Astrid wants to be JJ’s surrogate grandmother and helps her with the troll information search. Astrid tracks down the makes of the troll, and it turns out to be JJ’s grandfather! They have a touching reunion.
To celebrate JJ’s new family, Henrik takes her to see the northern lights.
It is time for the big wedding! The Norwegian traditions are like American, but with a Viking sense of danger! JJ tells Astrid that she is falling for her grandson.
Christmas comes, and JJ gets a grandpa (who was also Hendrik’s coach?) for Christmas; they don’t need a DNA test to feel like family.
JJ and Hendrik are about to have a Christmas kiss when those bullies come back. JJ goes all teacher mode on them and tells them to go away. Henrik gives JJ a necklace of labordite stone, and they kiss. The end.
