Synopsis (via Lifetime)

When bank customer service rep Shannon bends the rules to help a desperate client transfer a large sum of money, she quickly learns that he is not who he claims to be. As she frantically tries to set things right before anyone finds out, “The Caller” turns more menacing and threatens her by using personal information that he’s gathered from their calls. Stuck in the call center, she must figure out how to outwit The Caller and survive her shift. Stars Andrea Pazmino, Jose Eduardo Ramos, Katelin Chesna, and Cheryl Picket (2024).

Recap/Wine Thoughts

Shannon is a divorced mother who has trouble co-parenting with her ex-husband, Jole. The stress gets to her, but she pops pills to keep her anxiety at bay.

She connects with a client on the phone named Richard and enrolls him in perks between his arguing with someone on the other end. Shannon starts freaking out when the call is disconnected. Her co-workers, Jameila and Dave, try to calm her down. Shannon’s numbers are down, and customer ratings aren’t great. A fellow co-worker was fired recently for not meeting his numbers, which adds to Shannon’s stress.

Just another day in the office

A caller named Nicolas calls into the line and tells Shannon that his wife, Maggie Hayword, is in the hospital, and they need a line of credit for the medical bills. He is listed on the account but needs to know the passphrase. Shannon has him verify all the other information, and Nicolas answers everything correctly, gaining Shannon’s trust. She gives him her name and personal information in case he gets disconnected, which, of course, he does. Shannon tries to ask a supervisor for approval, but she can’t be bothered.

Robert calls back and tells Shannon that his wife needs surgery. He begs her to help him, and Shannon tries to wait for a supervisor by stalling with small talk. She reveals way too much about herself and her son. (Like his school and name?!?!)

Will she or won’t she?

Shannon unlocks the account and asks him how much he needs. She overrides the overdraft and approves 20K for Nicolas and his wife’s surgery. He hangs up once the money is transferred and gives her a good customer service score! The account is flagged for suspicious activity.

Pilar, the office manager, calls Shannon into her office. Shannon thinks she is in trouble, but Pilar just wants to go over some PTO and show her a scar from a robbery gone wrong. Pilar doesn’t approve time off for couples therapy and tells Shannon to be more dedicated to work. (Absolutely NOT, Pilar. Family first.)

This is me showing me my plastic surgeon where to put my botox

The real Mrs. Haywood calls into the bank and is PISSED! All her money is gone, and she has no idea what Shannon is talking about being in the hospital. She says her husband is off the grid for work and couldn’t have called in. Shannon realizes she has been tricked.

Shannon tries to suspend the transfer, which signals a bunch of alerts. She looks up the company policy and learns she could be facing 30 years in prison. As she looks online, her mediator calls and is upset that Shannon missed the session and has drugs in her system.

Nicolas calls back and asks where the money is. He sticks to his story about the hospital and his wife needing surgery. Shannon assures him that she will handle it and stops him from telling his boss. To cover her tracks, she sneaks into Pilar’s office and deletes the recording and transcript from the all. Then she declines the incoming calls from Nicolas, trying to stall until 5 pm when the bank closes.

It is only 1:34 pm when Shannon answers Nicolas’ call again. This time, she isn’t as accommodating, and Nicolas tells her to be careful about what she promises to customers. She hangs up on him, but then her cell phone starts ringing.

Shannon runs into the copy lobby and answers. It is Nicolas; he got her number from her when she gave him her full name. Shannon tells him not to call her on her cellphone anymore, and Nicolas threatens her.

Jamelia notices her co-worker freaking out and gives Shannon a number to another branch who can help. Shannon calls and asks for the name on the account. The branch manager tells Shannon that somebody opened the account with no name but uses the same address. Mike, the branch manager, thinks it could be a domestic situation and advises Shannon to stay out of it.

Maggie Haywood calls Shannon and is even more upset. Shannon decides to come clean and tell Maggie about the identity theft. Maggie blames Shannon and is LIVID.

Nicolas and Shannon talk on Shannon’s cell phone again. He is totally unhinged and threatens to take Dylan if she doesn’t give him the money.

Shannon is about to call the bank’s senior VP for help, but Pilar interrupts and asks about the flagged account. It looks like the VP re-authorized the transaction in the name of customer service. Then they talk on a three-way all. Nicolas gloats on the other end of the line. He also mentions Dylan’s school.

Nicolas puts in an immediate transfer, and that has the name. It is Steve Wilson, a felon and Maggie Haywood’s ex-husband. Maggie tells Shannon that she isn’t surprised and does not want to be involved because Steve is dangerous.

With only 25 minutes until 5 pm, Shannon has to decide what to do. She calls the fraud department. They ask if Shannon has gone to her manager and will be opening an investigation. Shannon could still lose her job for not using the proper channels.

Someone picks up Dylan, who isn’t who she had arranged. When she calls Dylan for help, he says she is crazy and probably overreacting. Then she gets a text from Nicolas; it is from Dylan’s school. Shannon rushes out of the bank and is relieved to see Dylan walking from school to her work.

Shannon brings her son into the office and apologizes to Pilar for breaking protocol. Pilar tells Shannon that she has committed a felony and should go to jail. Shannon begs for her job back and for another chance; Pilar isn’t having it, so she tells her to pack her things.

Meanwhile, Dylan eats candy in the office and is approached by a stranger. It is Steve Wilson, and he wants to talk to Shannon. They go into a private office, and he tells her how easy it is for Shannon to steal money and look like she is in on it. Mike feels entitled to the money and gets angry. Pilar interrupts the conversation, and Mike spins it to make it look like Shannon is behind everything.

Pilar rushes to call security, but Mike grabs her. As they struggle, Shannon grabs an office phone and knocks Mike out. It is enough to save them but not enough to keep her job. Mike is arrested, but it is little comfort for Shannon.

Side Note/Stray Thoughts
