Synopsis (via Lifetime)

After her boss-turned-secret lover is found dead, architect Sonja (Chelsea Gilligan) vows to give her marriage another chance. She and her husband decide to make a fresh start and rent a remote cabin. But when an unexpected neighbor appears at their door, they soon discover that she’s linked to Sonja’s adulterous past and is intent on taking “an eye for an eye.” Sydney Cole Alexander, Steven Good co-star. (2023)

Recap/Wine Thoughts

The movie starts with a lot of inner cut shots.

  • One lady is having some sex
  • One lady is running
  • Someone is Google Image searching

It might be all the same lady, and her name is Sonja. She is in therapy and trying to destress, but she trips into the woods and cries over a dead bird. It reminds her of the baby she lost due to a miscarriage. (Let’s just say Sonja is unwell! I mean, she explicitly sexts with an ex while getting divorced; it is dire!)

Ummmm. What am I Watching

I’m uncomfortable!!!!!! These texts are WILD!

Sonja’s husband wants to give the relationship another shot and asks Sonja to do a trial year and move to a small town in the woods. They decide to take things slow.

Their new neighbor, Mia, moved to the woods recently and lives next door after the police showed up at her door to let her know her husband died from auto affixation. Mia is shell-shocked and cries in bed, but the woods provide a nice getaway.

He’s cute

Jason and Sonja settle in their beautiful cabin and rekindle their romance. (AKA a sex scene interrupted by a miscarriage flashback. Yikes!) Sonja goes for another jog, listening to classical music while she runs. (This is psychotic.) She becomes curious about the house door and sees Mia’s luggage.

Mia comes over while Sonja is in town for work because her power is out due to a storm. (Or running every appliance in her new cabin.) Jason takes her in.

Back in the city, Sjona stops by their old house to get a few things and finds that the power is out and a baby toy is playing creepy music.

Flash to two weeks earlier, Mia is as distraught as she appeared at the news about her husband’s death. She has a plan for revenge after recognizing Sonja’s perfume and realizing her husband was cheating on her with a co-worker. Once Mia unlocks her husband’s phone, it is on!

Back in the present, Jason invites Mia, who is now using Claire as a pseudonym, to stay in the guest room for the night until the storm passes. (He gives her his wife’s clothes, which is weird, right?) Jason fixes the electrical at her house while wearing a top knot. Mia invites herself over for dinner and puts her number in his phone.

The only problem is Sonja is stuck in the city. Mia guilts Jason into having dinner anyway, claiming to have spent the whole day cooking. (She says this as she pulls out a rotisserie chicken, and that’s when I knew this movie was for me.) Jason enjoys the chicken and lots of wine. That causes him to open up about his wife and losing the baby. Mia tries to cross the line, but Jason stops her.

Sonja comes back and just misses Mia leaving the cabin. Jason acts VERY suspiciously, even though he didn’t do anything wrong.

Mia has a full-on breakdown. (But she looks good doing it!) Then she calls her husband’s work to get more information about Sonja since they are co-workers. Mia and Sonja finally meet, and Mia fantasizes about hitting Sonja. Then they have coffee! Mia intentionally spills on Sonja, causing burns on her leg. (This freaked me out because of that McDonald’s hot coffee lady!)

Mia’s visit causes an argument between Jason and Sonja. Jason goes into the city for some space.

Sonja puts on a record and plans to veg out, but Mia shows up unannounced and scares her. Mia gifts Sonja a bottle of wine, which Sonja rudely rejects! Mia confronts Sonja about Jason and implies she is worried Sonha is trapped in an abusive relationship. Mia creeps Sonja out and finds a set of sheets in the wash. Sonja admits to sleeping over in the guest room, which pisses Sonja off, and she asks for space. (Mia fantasizes about spitting in Sonja’s face.

Sonja goes for another run, which Mia interrupts and reveals more details about what happened between her and Jason. Jason come back from the city and he is even more in the dog house than when he left! As they argue, Sonja sees Mia watching them and follows her to the cabin and finds it empty, like no one is living there. Mia is a squatter.

Mia tells Sonja who she REALLY is, and Sonja apologizes for sleeping with his husband. Sonja didn’t know she was sleeping with a married man, and they hug it out?!?! Mia recites the sexts and blames Sonja for the autoerotic affixation. (Which Mia has a right to be!) Mia lets Sonja leave and promises to sleep with her husband for revenge.

Jason breaks up with Sonja after she tells him about having an affair; he tells her to go to a hotel for the night and isn’t interested in what Sonja has to say about Mia/Claire. Sonja goes back to the city and talks with her therapist. Their call is interrupted by a delivery: a yellow baby shoe from the crib and a note that reads, “An Eye for an Eye.”

Mia bashes herself in the face with a door and goes over to see Jason. She claims Sonja attacked her. Jason is horrified and appalled by his wife’s behavior. He pours Mia a drink, and they get drunk together. Three shots to the face back to back! Mia lures Jason to the bedroom so Sonja will find them in a compromising position. (Tied up with a belt around his neck!!!!!)

Sonja rushes to the cabin to save her husband, and she tries to untie him. Mia comes out with a gun and tells Sonja to shut up and shoots at Sonja, hitting Jason instead. Mia and Sonja fight over the gun, and Sonja gets the gun and calls 911.

Mia tells Sonja that she will get away and is using her husband’s wake and funeral as her alibi. She is also wearing gloves and took the bullets out of the gun. Mia makes a clean getaway, and Sonja looks guilty AF! So guilty, in fact, that Sonja gets locked up! Jason is on life support, and Mia is waiting for her sequel!

Side Note/Stray Thoughts

Tubi acquisition. An interesting trend for Lifetime this year is that sometimes these Tubi movies feel more “Lifetimey” than those that Lifetime produces.

The motives in this movie were clear, the acting was solid, and the tension was high.

  1. Lifetime is really beginning to double down on their habit of stealing movies from Tubi
