Synopsis (via Lifetime)

When the demands of JACKSON’s (18) new job start to spiral dangerously out of control, his mom, MARIA (40s), must free her son from a ring of exploitation that runs deep in her community – before he is killed.

Recap/Wine Thoughts

The movie starts in the aftermath of a party, where a guy dressed like a waiter finds a dead body!

Recently widowed, Maria and Uncle Pete throw her son Jackson an 18th (Going on 30th) birthday party. Jackson isn’t just celebrating adulthood; he also receives consideration for a full soccer college scholarship with another kid named Tyler. Uncle Pete is the coach, and it seems like there could be some nepotism at play here. Jackson is a momma’s boy.

They should return this cake.

Maria owns a bakery she started with her dead husband and is considering selling. Uncle/Coach Pete tells Maria she should sell and encourages her to continue her life. Jackson overhears the conversation and wants his mother to keep the bakery since it reminds him of his dead dad. Jackson takes a job that his friend Tyler recommends to help make ends meet and pay the bakery rent. The job is in the “service industry” at a masquerade/possible sex cult called the Blue Fox Club. (The money is too good to pass up, and he returns for more.)

They had some romantic chemistry

Jackson drops off an envelope of cash to his mother, who is like, “WTF?” Jackson tells Maria he has taken up a moonlighting gig to help with the family business. The money is a cash “advance.” Maria doesn’t ask questions; it is a good thing she doesn’t because things get weird at a Full Moon Party.

Maria receives pictures of Tyler and Jackson at the party and tells Uncle Pete, who promises to talk to the boys. (He has a total boys will be boys response.) Maria confronts Jackson about his job, and he tells his mom to just use his college fund; it is too late. Maria has already done that. The restaurant has been shut down for some leaky pipes. Maria is overwhelmed with guilt and doesn’t want Jackson to make risky decisions for her financial mistakes.

The only Peeping Tom in this movie is Maria

Maria tracks down Jackson from the photo location and peeks into the house to see the masquerade/sex party. She is spotted and kicked off the premises. She asks her friend, Beth, for help finding the mansion’s owner. They do some online research and determine Christine Clayworth, a real estate agent, is organizing the whole sex group. Beth and Maria go to the police.

Tyler has been sending out the photos and lets Jackson delete them from his phone. Jackson thinks he has deleted all the evidence of his extracurricular activities and celebrates with another waiter named Myles. The drink is positioned, and Myles is the dead guy from the beginning of the movie. Tyler handles the body and creates a story about Myles hitchhiking to Seattle. He wants Jackson and CJ to play it cool.

Tyler was running the show

Jackson stands up to Tyler and tells him he is done, letting him call the shots. Jackson has a gun in his backpack, but that doesn’t stop Tyler from beating Jackson up and leaving him in the street.

Maria and Jackson are chloroformed by someone in the back seat of their car. They wake up, and Tyler tells them he has been working with someone the whole time. Uncle Pete is a little too invested and “helpful” not to be involved in this somehow. He has been working with Tyler because Uncle Peter is Tyler’s dad? Tyler and Uncle Peter randomly struggle over the gun, and Uncle Pete ends up shot.

Tyler had the best reactions, TBH!
Whoops! I shot my dad!

Maria runs for help but ends up just hiding in the mansion. Tyler hunts Maria down with the gun. She eventually runs right past him and tries to talk him down while Jackson sneaks up from behind. It’s Maria who eventually knocks Tyler out with a vase as the police pull up.

Maria dates a detective and has FaceTimes with Jackson, who is away at college. The end!

Y’all want me to believe his man is in high school?!!?!?

Side Note/Stray Thoughts

This was one of the most unsexy Lifetime movies. Couldn’t we have a tawdry masquerade scene or at least a shirtless hunk in the locker room?

Kate Drummond is one of my favorite Lifetime actresses; this movie just didn’t work for my script-wise.

  1. It’s hard to believe that Kate Drummond is 49 years old. She looks much older. Im 61 and she looks much older than me. She needs botox. On the other hand, its nice to see that an actress doesnt have to look 25 years old to get movies roles. She’s proud of aging. Good for her
