Synopsis (via Lifetime)
Diane is a former hockey player who becomes obsessed with the success of her son, Alex. Fueled by jealousy toward Rachel and her star son, she manipulates, sabotages and endangers others to ensure Alex comes out on top.
Recap/Wine Thoughts
The movie starts in a Hockey rink, as the title might suggest. It is a girls’ team tho!!! Diane is a headstrong/selfish player who debates with her coach. It is a trait she takes into adulthood, screaming at her son, Alex, while he plays on the ice. Diane also tries to coach the coach. Coach Mike isn’t impressed with her businski attitude.
In the locker room, these teenagers are at LEAST thirty-year-olds with a close shave.
Rachel is another hockey mom who isn’t as invested or knowledgeable and is just trying to get by as a single mother to her son, Ethan. Ethan has hand-me-down pads, and Diane thinks it is an embarrassment. Rachel has car trouble, and Diane shows up to help fix it and offer unsolicited parenting advice.
Alex goes out with the boys, and Diane checks his breath for booze, then gets more upset when she smells nachos and soda. It goes against his diet! Diane wants Alex to be on his A-Game because a talent scout is coming, and they aren’t as well off financially as she pretends. His father left them a ton of debt. So, the stakes are high for Alex’s success.
Coach Mike tells Diane that she should be a coach and lay off the advice. Diane tries to bribe him with baked goods to feature Alex more in the last few games. Then she accuses him of having a secret relationship with Rachel, which he is! Coach Mike puts his foot down and tells her to back off.
While cleaning the ice with the Zamboni after hours, Diane furiously bakes. It is a weird juxtaposition, but eventually the Zamboni goes haywire, and Coach Mike is injured. Rachel visits him in the hospital and calls off the relationship because she doesn’t want anyone to think Ethan is getting special treatment. He IS getting special treatment, special threatening notes in his locker.
Alex is dating a tart named Emma, which is against his mother’s rules. Diane has no problems breaking all the rules for her son, like trying to seduce the college scout and stalking him after he tells Diane that Alex isn’t his first pick.
With no coach, Diane steps in. She tries to turn Alex and Ethan against eachother on the ice. Diane also plants booze in Ethan’s locker. Ethan has been suspended from the team. Rachel is sure Diane is behind the incident.
Diane’s past catches up with her after Rachel talks to a former teammate, Suzanne. Suzanne says Diane could have gone to the Olympics, but started sabotaging the other girls by staging “accidents” to take them out of the running.
Rachel decides to check Ethan’s room after Diane suggests looking for drugs, and he catches her. Ethan denies being a boozer and shows his mother the note that was in his locker exposing Rachel and Coach Mike kissing.
Alex and Ethan squash their not-so-heated rivalry and makeout, I mean MAKEUP, in the locker room. Diane makes a poisoned cupcake and leaves it for Ethan, but another athlete eats it.
Rachel confronts Diane at the game and calls her a pathetic loser. Diane punches herself in the face and screams, blaming the altercation on Rachel. Rachel is kicked out of the hockey arena by THE LAMEST SECURITY GUARD.
At the game, the scout watches intently. Diane lures Ethan off the ice, saying his mother is in trouble. She locks him in the weight room so Alex can have his moment.
Diane and Rachel battle with hockeysticks in the weight room, while Ethan tries to bust out of the locked closet. Eventually, he gets free and wins the scholarship. Horray! Diane is arrested, and her son does NOT go to college; he is probably selling his body on the street, poor guy.
STRAY Thought
How does Lifetime always capitalize on the moment? Hockey is hot right now with Heated Rilvary. Although this Canadian export was a lot less horny.
Boy moms aren’t really depicted often on Lifetime.
The ending seemed abrupt
