Synopsis (via Lifetime)
Inspired by the true story of a high school aged social media influencer who’s stalker showed up on her doorstep with a gun after she had blocked him online. 17-year-old Benri’s life seems perfect: she’s popular, heading to NYU in the fall, and a burgeoning social media influencer. But behind her perfect seeming facade, Berni’s life is a mess: her best friend is betraying her, she’s struggling to gain anymore followers, and her boyfriend Zack dumps her. Heartbroken, Berni starts up a friendship with Mason, one of her online fans, and agrees to sell him private “fan photos”. After Berni and Zack get back together, Berni tries to break things off with Mason and things turn deadly. Mason shows up on Berni’s doorstep with a gun, ready to kill her; a fight ensues and Berni’s mom Leah shoots Mason dead. Stars Courtney Thorne-Smith, and Stella Gregg (2024).
Recap/Wine Thoughts
A teenager/influencer named Berni balances the urge to overshare online and being a typical teen. (Or maybe she is a normal teen?) Her mom-ager, Leah, isn’t happy with her daughter’s social media presence and, more importantly, her sponsored content. Lisa is heartless with her parenting advice and nitpicks about Berni’s appearance.
Berni does have friends IRL, mostly her boyfriend Zak, who used to date her friend Hana. (Hana seems jealous and competitive/shady with Berni.) Her friend Jaz and her boyfriend Jorge are also around. Unlike most Lifetime movies, these teens seem like their actual age, rather than a 30-year-old actor with a backpack.
Leah doesn’t let up on her social media shaming/advice and lectures Berni about sticking to her commitments. The brand wants a promposal, which causes a fight between Zak and Bernie. He feels like a prop in one of her videos and doesn’t want to film. Then, he films a video with Hannah, and she tags Berni in it. (RUDE!)
The internet is buzzing with break-up rumors, and one user in particular named Mason Michaels consoles her. He messages her constantly and tells Berni that he is beautiful. She is so attractive that he offers to pay Bernie $100 for a selfie. Bernie tells Leah about the offer, and the mother of the year is excited for another revenue stream. (But she doesn’t want Berni to take any nudes or risque photos.) Berni gets into NYU, and the money problems become apparent. Bernie decides to send some spicier pics to Mason Michaels for more cash. ($500 more!)
Zak comes through with the promposal (THANKFULLY we’ve got sponsors on the line, Zak!!) Hana even apologizes to Berni for the misunderstanding; she claims she hasn’t been trying to steal Berni’s man. (But she totally is!) @masonmichels sees the promposal and is not a fan of Zak or the video. Even though he is incessantly messaging Berni, Hana is acting like the true villain in this movie. (Well, after Leah.)
@masonmichael shows up at Zak’s basketball game and gives a letter to Berni after the match. She tells him to leave her alone and thinks he is super creepy. Hana sees them talking and finds out that Mason is obsessed with Berni; instead of reporting him, Hana gives him Berni’s cellphone number and home address. The stalking intensifies.
Mason shows up at Berni’s house with flowers, and she turns him down. Mason tells her they are meant to be and shares all he knows about her to prove his love. Bernie tells him that the things he shared are just facts she posted online. Then, she slams the door in his face.
Mason doesn’t take no for an answer and pulls a gun on Berni. He holds her at gunpoint while Leah tries to reason with the stalker. Then Leah smashes Mason over the head with a vase and hides Bernie in a cabinet. Mason finds Bernie and almost kills her, but Leah shoots Mason and kills him. (A PR NIGHTMARE!)
Leah goes into clean-up mode. She forces Berni to wipe her phone. Berni also deletes Mason’s sexy pic messages from his phone. Leah comes with the story, and they will tell the police to spin the story in their favor. Mason was just an obsessed stalker. The police don’t question the story and tell Bernie to put the whole thing behind her. Bernie suffers from severe PTSD. When news stations pick up the story and surround their house, things become much, much worse.
Leah already has a plan B. She tells Berni to go online and post a live video update about the “true” story. It is total damage control. The plan works, and Berni gets an interview with the New Yorker (Or something.) Leah sees an uptick in her business and is loving the publicity.
Hana and Jaz see the live post and Hana knows it is a lie because they were working together. Mason’s mom also speaks out against Berni’s story. Then, conspiracy theorists online start going off about things that are not adding up. Bernie notices that Hana is using her for social media clout. The ‘friends’ get into an argument. Hana admits to giving Berni’s address.
Berni does a controversial interview with my favorite E! Entertainment correspondent. (I don’t know her real name, tho!) The reporter claims to have a video of Berni and Mason together that Hana took, negating Berni’s claim to have no contact with Mason. It causes an online sensation of haters in the comments. The situation gets so bad that Berni has to turn off her comments.
Then, Mason’s mom shows up at prom and plays the video she downloaded to the cloud!!! (You know Lifetime loves to talk about the mysterious cloud, haha!) The post causes Zak and Berni’s remaining friend to turn their backs on her. Berni even gets her admission into NYU revoked.
Leah tells her daughter that she will handle everything; Bernie can’t stop seeing Mason’s dead body. She is overcome with guilt and talks to police detectives, implicating her mother in the cover-up, which is true. Leah is responsible, so she had better go to jail.
Berni posts a REAL apology and tells the truth about Mason and the sexy photos. She hopes people will learn from her mistakes. She warns her followers not to believe everything they see on the internet. Then, she confronts Hana and demands an apology for playing dirty. Hana dumbly admits to her wrongdoings, and, of course, Berni is in on a live video broadcasting the whole thing.
In the end, Zak stands by Berni. He is the only person she can count on. She can also count on her remaining followers. The apology goes over well, and Berni gets back into NYU. She is ready for a fresh start.
One year later, Leah (who is out of jail!) and Berni started a women’s shelter to help stalking victims. The End!
Side Note/Stray Thoughts
This was very outside-the-box structure-wise, and I found that refreshing.
The topic was as cringe-inducing as you would expect with Lifetime and tech.
