Melanie’s (Cerra) 17-year-old autistic daughter Jenny (Burghardt) is a senior in high school and looking forward to college. After a bad experience her junior year, Jenny is not interested in attending her final Christmas dance before graduating. Melanie decides to surprise Jenny by getting involved in the school’s planning committee to create a welcoming dance for all students. Meanwhile, Jenny and her friends secretly plan their own party, in part to honor Melanie. Melanie works with Jenny’s literature teacher (Ghanimé) on the dance and starts to fall for him while Jenny develops something special with a new classmate (Giordano) at school. When their secrets snowball, however, their plans begin to drive a wedge between the usually tightknit mother and daughter at the holidays.
Recap/Wine Thoughts
Single mother Melanie raises her teenage daughter Jenny, who is autistic. They prepare for the school dance, and Jenny looks fabulous. Melanie worries that the other kids will bully her daughter and chaperone the dance. Melanie talks with Jenny’s favorite teacher, Daniel, who is a big fan of Jenny as a student. Jenny becomes overstimulated and has to leave the dance early. Snow seems to trigger her.
One Year Later, Jenny is applying to colleges and doesn’t want to attend the holiday dance again. Melanie wants Jenny to attend the dance, but Jenny isn’t interested. She plans her own dance with a few friends with no loud music, strobing lights, and, most importantly, NO SNOW! Melanie, while joining the PTA to help plan a more inclusive school dance. (Since this a Hallmark movie, they both keep the dance plans a secret from one another.)
Jenny helps a classmate when he is bullied and learns that he is autistic to. Will’s mom becomes friends with Melanie and supports her decision to join the PTA and help make things more accessible. Melanie gets partnered with Daniel for the project. They plan while cutting down a Christmas tree and are caught together by Jenny and her friends.
Jenny gives Will her number, and they start texting. He agrees to help her and her friends plan their party! Will’s parents own the local tree farm, and he offers to ask his parents to sell trees to raise money for party supplies. Will really likes Trains and will build one for the dance. Will and Jenny communicate well and give one another space when needed. Will even come through with a venue! A barn on his parent’s lot.
Melanie spends all her time planning her silent disco. The PTA is skeptical because a silent disco is so… “DIFFERENT.” They vote for Melanie’s dance committee chair so they don’t have to deal with it. The PTA is LAME.
While setting up for the party, Jenny gets an alert on her phone that it will snow in 20 minutes, and she rushes to get home. Melanie spends her evening with Daniel, and when she sees it snowing, she rushes home to find her daughter self-soothing.
Daniel gets a text invite to the super secret party and tries to tell Melanie, but she is too preoccupied with worrying about her daughter. Jenny is having trouble keeping her secret party a secret and can’t talk about her budding relationship with Will. Melanie is also keeping secrets from her daughter, and it is starting to affect their relationship.
Melanie and Daniel have a romantic date, and they kiss, but then he blows the lid off everything and accidentally ruins Melanie and Jenny’s surprise. He was invited to both parties, so he thought the mother and daughter might have discussed things. Melanie blames Daniel unfairly.
Jenny retreats to the barn to throw herself into decorating, and Melanie finds her daughter and is impressed with what she has put together. Jenny wants independence and wants to show her mother what she can do. They make up and decide to combine the dances. Melanie also makes up with Daniel so she can have a date for the dance.
There is a getting-ready montage, which honestly could have been longer! Jenny comes downstairs and has a full-on Teen Movie moment. Then she sees it is snowing outside and is afraid to go out. Will tells Jenny about snow, and she tells him to shut up, but he can’t because he is excited about being with her. And he talks when he is excited.
The party is a success.
Daniel plans to go on a sabbatical to Paris to write poetry. Melanie wants to go with him, and Jenny helps to orchestrate a grand gesture. Melanie reads one of Daniels’s poems in the middle of the dance. He is very touched, and when he finds out she wants to join him in Paris, he is 100% into the idea. They kiss. The end!
Side Note/Stray Thoughts
