Synopsis (via BET+)
When the Christmas Jubilee at the local community center is in danger of losing funding, the family must band together to make sure everyone, including the kids, have a Merry Christmas.
Recap/Wine Thoughts
Married couple Roz and Dalton are preparing for another family holiday! Lucky for them, Granny is in town to help take care of their son, Dylan.
Roz is preparing for the South Side Community Center’s Christmas Jubilee, but the budget is tight. Then, she gets a disappointing call. The local government goes against the community’s wishes and plans to redevelop for commercial real estate. They need to develop funds, and the city cut all auxiliary programming, including the Christmas Jubilee. Roz goes home defeated and is not amused when Dalton and the boys make fun of her for using Himalayan set salt in her chicken recipe.
Dalton is relaxed because he has closed a big deal before the holidays. He overhears his co-worker, James, on the phone with the landlord. The pipe in James’s apartment broke, and it flooded. Leaving James homeless for the holidays. (which should be the title of one of these Christmas movies by now!) Dalton offers James a guest room, but James declines the invitation, planning to stay at a hotel instead.
James can’t find a hotel and ponys up at a cafe to devise a plan. He orders a blueberry muffin and leaves the table to wash his hands. Lisa, Roz’s sister, sits at the table and the waitress brings the blueberry muffin. Lisa helps herself and is surprised when James tells her she is eating his muffin in his seat. Lisa tries to argue, but James grabs the muffin and eats it slowly while porno music plays in he background. Lisa rushes out of the cafe, disgusted and annoyed.
When James walks in, Lisa almost chokes on her oversalted chicken at the family dinner. She asks Dalton why he invited a muffin thief to dinner and suggests a homeless shelter instead of giving Jake the spare room! (She is SAVAGE!) After that drama subsides, Roz comes clean about the South Side Community Center closing, and the family band together to put on the Christmas Jubilee with no budget!
There is a C romance with Peter and an old flame, Patricia. He isn’t sure if he is ready to get back into dating after his wife passed away, but he hasn’t even considered dating until Patricia, so that is something.
Lisa and James brainstorm FREE activities for the Christmas Jubilee. They start to fall in love, duh!
Dylan tries to reconnect James with his family and calls James’ father late in the evening. (While showing off his abs! Woo!) James overhears the call and rightfully yells at James for meddling. Dalton explains that he said some things to his father that he couldn’t take back before he died suddenly. (I’m like Dalton… you’re projecting! Leave James to handle his own family relationships.)
James does open up to Lisa about his feelings about his philandering father. James doesn’t want to forgive him because when his mother died, she was alone in a hospital while her husband was out having an affair. Lisa listens and doesn’t offer advice. It is the best thing she can do for him in that moment.
On a jog, Roz runs into a local man (or possible ghost!) named Noel and tells him about her troubles planning Christmas Jubilee. He inspires Roz to go to city hall and make a ruckus. Mrs. Bradly is unimpressed with the intrusion on her holiday break. She agrees to give them funding to leave her alone. (Like, she write them a personal check, hahaha!)
The Christmas Jubilee is back on and the family all celebrate the holidays together. James reconciles with his dad, Patricia and Peter start to date but take things slowly, and Mrs. Bradly has a change of heart and decides to vote to keep the South Side Community Center and not redevelop. CHRISTMAS IS SAVED!
Side Note
The music direction in this one was INSANE!
