INSPIRED BY TRUE EVENTS – Lacey goes on a lavish vacation with her gal pals Rebecca, Addie, and Janice. Everything changes when Janice is found dead by the mansion’s swimming pool. The women tell the police she must have fallen after one too many drinks. But Lacey went to bed early that night and overheard an argument. She’s not convinced it was the accident her friends claim. As she returns home to the white picket fences and maple trees of her suburban street, Lacey becomes convinced that the housewives are each covering up a deadly secret they’d do anything to protect… have they killed once, and would they kill again to conceal the truth?
Recap/Wine Thoughts
The movie starts in a typical suburban neighborhood. Lacey is getting ready for a girl’s trip while her workaholic husband, Blake, draws up architect plans like he is Mike Brady. Lacey worries about telling her girlfriends she is pregnant, while Blake worries about telling Lacey he booked a “work weekend” with his pretty co-worker Cathy. They are a little too close for comfort, especially in front of Blake’s wife. (Show some respect, Cathy!)

There isn’t time to worry about Blake’s possible philandering; Janice shows up with a bullhorn and shouts at the girls to get in the car. Addie is sad to leave her tween son for the first time, but IT IS TIME FOR A FUN GIRLS TRIP. Hurricane Rebecca is the lady of the hour, and they are going to celebrate her 40th birthday. (She seems high-maintenance to me and mentions her designer shows, which will probably come back. Update: They don’t)

The four friends roll up to the mansion they are staying at, and surprisingly, it isn’t in the middle of the woods or creepy! The really scary thing is the secrets these friends are keeping from one another. Janice, the loudmouth, finds out about Lacey’s pregnancy immediately and has a secret USB from work.
After a “having fun montage.” The friends play a truth card game. It turns out Janice is the newest friend. Lacey also comes clean about being pregnant and apologizes for taking the spotlight off of the birthday girl.

Lacey goes to bed early and texts with Blake while watching old scary movies. (Is she me?!?!) Then, at 4:11 AM, Lacey is awakened by an argument and a loud thud. She falls back to sleep and thinks nothing of it until the following day… when Janice is found thrown over a balcony.

The police arrive on the scene and interview the friends. Lacey mentions the sounds she heard in the middle of the night; no one else heard the sound, and the detective suggests it could have just been the TV. The girl’s trip is ruined, and everyone just goes back home.
Blake takes care of Lacey; she is having difficulty with Janice’s death. Lacey can’t find any friends, family, or even co-workers of Janice’s. The friends meet and learn they have different stories about Janice’s past. Lacey thinks it is strange, and her friends gaslight her into thinking she is suffering from pregnancy brain and projecting her own unhappy marriage on Janice’s life.

Lacey can’t let it go. She breaks into Jancie’s house, looks through some files, and steals a set of keys. (To a storage locker) She tries to text the group chat, but her number is blocked. Addie and Rebecca think that Lacey is treating Janice’s death like a true crime podcast to distract herself from her troubled relationship with Blake and Cathy.
With no friends and a possible cheating husband, Lacey is fine to go to the storage unit and see what is inside. The place is full of boxes of fake IDs Janice used, a serial killer wall, and, of course, some cash and guns! While Lacey is snooping, someone sneaks into her car, blasts heavy metal music, and spray paints on the garage, “Stay out of this, Lacey!!!”

The stress is too much, and the doctor is concerned about Lacey’s blood pressure. He orders her to rest and live a stress-free life. That is impossible for Lacey, who sneaks into Addie’s house while her son’s birthday party is going on and snoops through Addie’s mirrored dresser. (Seriously, so 80s, OMG!!!) Lacey finds the lipstick hard drive that belonged to Janice. Addie catches her ex-friend and has to come clean.
Addie and her son left an abusive relationship and claimed her husband died, but Kurt is alive, and he hired Janice to find his wife. Addie and Rebecca catch Lacey up, and their story is pretty sus. They were the ones arguing in the middle of the night, and Janice fell over the banister. Lacey wants them to go to the police, but Rebecca and Addie want to keep this secret. They will go to any length to shut up their friend, like turning on Baby monitors and hiding them in Lacey’s house.

Rebecca distracts Lacey by planting Cathy’s panties on Blake’s side of the bed. Lacey finds the negligee and confronts Blake (after sniffing them, which is weird.) Blake often denies everything and talks with his hands, which makes him look even more guilty. Lacey kicks Blake out, finds the baby monitors, and sets up a trap to catch Rebecca in her lies.

Rebecca shows up VERY RANDOMLY with a gun and pulls it on Lacey. Wait, I think I missed a scene. I guess Addie and Lacey went to the cops. Lacey distracts Rebecca by talking about her baby, and she grabs the gun. Lacey tries to talk Rebecca into turning herself in, and Rebecca admits that the gun was never loaded. They sit down on the couch and look at a photo of Addie and her son to remind them of who they are trying to protect. Addie from her abusive husband.

Addie is out on bail after updating her story to the police. Kurt has been in town the whole time. Lacey recognizes a stupid bracelet that Blake’s new business partner wears and pieces everything together. They rush to help Addie.

Kurt forces Lacey to show him where the flash drive is with incriminating evidence of his abusive behavior. He tells Lacey that Janice worked for him, but she got cold feet. Kurt has been orchestrating the whole thing behind the scenes and used Blake to get closer to the friend group. Lacey fights Kurt off to save the drive and almost ends up stabbed, but Addie comes through with a fire poker and kills Kurt.
The movie ends with a BBQ and lots of pink clothing. The end!

Stray Thoughts
It is not the most compelling abusive husband movie; it felt more like a plot point rather than like the movie had anything to say about domestic abuse.
Janice was the most interesting character, and they killed her off! Cathy, on the other hand… could have gone the way of the Dodo.

Weird how 1) Cathy didn’t come up again, and 2) Rebecca’s husband never showed up!
