Synopsis (via Lifetime)

When two extremely underfed and seemingly parentless teenage girls, Juniper and Briar, the younger of which gravely ill, arrive in the picturesque wooded town of Buellesberg, local nurse Shannon and her husband Rob go out of their way to take in the at-risk siblings. Unable to have children of her own, Shannon sees the girls as a personal miracle and jumps at the chance to be a mother. But as she opens her life up to the new arrivals, the biological parents the girls left behind arrive with the deadly intention to take their girls back by whatever means necessary. Elizbeth Longshaw, Stafford Perry, and Marcus Rosner star (2025).

Recap/Wine Thoughts

Sisters Juniper and Briar go for a piggyback ride in the woods. They are escaping something, coming across a Little League game, and collapsing on the field. Briar has TB, and the sisters are rushed to the hospital. Juniper and Briar are minors, and CPS tries to locate their parents.

Juniper gets freaked out and wants to leave, but an RN named Shannon agrees to foster them until they get things sorted out. Shannon and her husband were already in the system because they wanted to adopt a child.

Shannon tells my husband, Marcus Rosner. (I mean HER husband.) about the girls and her concern for them. He is hot and surprisingly supportive of his wife. He even offers to set up the guest bedroom while she returns to the hospital to stay with the girls.

The girls are discharged, and so removed from the modern world that they have never been in a car before. When they see their new house, they look around blank-eyed and quietly observe. The sisters seem more at home in the tree house. They get cleaned up, but everything is new and confusing for them. Shannon and Marcus Rosner have concerns, but try to give the girls an everyday life. The sisters have never even had ice cream before.

Stephen, a man in a stained T-shirt and a plaid shirt, lurks around the hospital and follows Shannon in the parking lot. He breaks into the house with a female accomplice, and they overhear the house code when Rob resets it. They are the girls’ parents and show up at the police station looking for their kids. The police have questions for the neglectful parents. The Zelot parents are upset that they can’t have the girls and have to have a court hearing. In the meantime, the sisters will stay with their foster parents.

The judge rules that the sisters must stay with their foster parents until they are better. The sisters try to run away and see their parents in the bushes; instead of running to them, they return to the house to escape their parents’ control. The caseworker allows for supervised visits, and it is clear the parents are abusive and parent with fear. Shannon feels threatened by Stephen, who tells her this will end “one way or another.”

Briar and Juniper go to school and are like, WTF is this nonsense. Juniper adjusts better, has a crush on a boy in her class, and wants to try out for the soccer team. Briar gets into fights with kids and has violent outbursts. Juniper tries to talk to her sister about adjusting to their new lives. Just because they grew up in the woods doesn’t mean they need to act like animals.

Marcus Rosner works in construction, and that is hot. Stephen sneaks onto the work site and rigs some electrical to try and take out my BABY! Shannon worries that the job mishap was intentional. Still, Marcus Rosner laughs it off and tells Shannon not to worry about him.

Holly, the girl’s mother, sneaks into the house and disables the alarm. She wanders around the house, goes through Shannon’s closet, and tries on her clothes and perfume. Maybe she doesn’t want to live life off the grid after all and is being controlled by Stephen.

Marcus Rosner has second thoughts about fostering the kids, and Shannon worries that he means he doesn’t want to have kids at all. It is all too much with Briar’s outbursts becoming more frequent and her odd behavior of talking to bushes. Shannon is more understanding, and when she finds Holly hiding in the bushes, she invites the mother in and gives Holly a ride back to the woods. Holly tells Shannon to stop being so nice and to be more careful.

Juniper practices soccer in the backyard with Marcus Rosner while talking about boys. Briar even jumps in. Maybe he has had a change of heart about the whole parenting thing.

At the hospital, Shannon goes about her work while Stephen unknowingly works to sabotage her patients’ well-being to make her look incompetent. Shannon saves the patient from dying, but her boss is unhappy with her and suspends her. Shannon is sure that Stephen is behind the incident.

Stephen and Holly have a nighttime meeting in the woods with Briar. Stephen tells her that she needs to lie in court or else she will DIE. He tells her that her foster parents are bad people. Then, they just leave her to be lost in the suburbs. The police are called, but it looks bad for Shannon and Marcus Rosner. The parents and foster parents argue, and things get physical.

Juniper opens up about what home life is really like. Her father was involved in a mass shooting at a movie theater, and the incident caused him to seclude his family to camp in the woods. Briar eventually got sick, and Stephen refused medical treatment, so Juniper ran away to save her sister’s life. Juniper cries and begs her foster parents not to let her go back.

The judge has questions for everyone, and the courtroom is tense. The judge rules a full investigation into child neglect and awards Shannon and Marcus Rosner full custody of the children.

Juniper goes to PROM and really fits in. Meanwhile, Briar continues to sneak into the bushes to talk to her parents. She goes outside, and Stephen kidnaps her. Shannon and Marcus Rosner rush to find Briar. They find a note left for Juniper saying they took her. Juniper draws a woods map so Marcus Rosner can get Briar back.

In the woods, Stephen has set legitimate traps everywhere to stop anyone from getting close to the house. Marcus Rosner, Juniper, and Shannon find the house, but Marcus Rosner gets caught in a bear trap! Even that won’t stop them.

Shannon tackles Holly, who has a crossbow. At the same time, Marcus Rosner wrestles with Stephen. Juniper grabs Briar and tells her mother to let them go where it is safe. Stephen is unhinged at his point, and Holly has to knock him out with a cast-iron skillet. The police arrive and arrest the parents. Everyone is safe.

Holly goes to therapy and is allowed supervised visits with the kids. Stephen goes to jail. The end!

  1. How did the parents find the kids? The dad was outside the hospital when Shannon (foster mom)went home. Normally I’d say he followed her except he didnt have a car. And since he didnt have access to computer he couldn’t look things up.
