Synopsis (via Lifetime)

When a desperate kidnapper invades her church as she’s cleaning up alone after service, organist Mary must rely on her wits and her faith to save herself—and the young woman he’s taken captive.

Recap/Wine Thoughts

The movie begins at church, organist/nurse Mary is having an emotional meltdown in the bathroom while caressing a wooden crucifix. (Not sure if that is how that is done.) She is getting divorced, which is a sin! The church conductor, James, worries that Mary won’t be able to play for the Sunday service.

Church gossip, Tina, tells Mary that she saw her ex-husband Kevin at the grocery store WITH ANOTHER WOMAN! Tina is ruthless in her gossip glee and knows how to get an Uber herself.

Mary closes up the church and cuts her fingers while picking up a bible. (Bad sign.) The blood leaves a cross sign on her finger, or am I reading too much into things? Mary gets first aid and leaves her phone in the pews. As she puts a Band-Aid on, Mary remembers the fertility troubles that led to her marriage dissolving.

The sound of arguing snaps Mary out of it, and she sees a young girl fighting with a man with a Boston accent in the church. The man ties up the young girl, Brianna, and tells her that they are running off together, even though he is essentially kidnapping her. As they argue, Mary cautiously listens and decides to hide when the man finds her phone and knows she is in the church. The man searches the church, but doesn’t find Mary.

Brianna tries to escape, and there is a struggle. Mary intervenes with a crowbar, but the man stops her and ties them both up. He pulls a knife on them and then goes out back to check out Mary’s car. Brianna and Mary connect and promise to get out of this situation. Brianna tells Mary that the man is her estranged father, Troy, whom she has never met. Troy kidnapped Brianna in the middle of the night and promised not to hurt her.

Troy slashes Mary’s tires and comes back to find them talking. He plans to head to Canada, but may not make it with a wound to his abdomen. They spent the night in the church so Troy could get some rest, but the church has a visitor, James, the choir director. Troy unties Mary so she can get rid of him. Then he decides he can’t trust her and talks to James himself.

James notices some things out of place and has a bad feeling about Troy, but doesn’t follow his gut and leaves. Mary tries to signal James from a window. When he notices Mary’s car, he tries to call for help but ends up getting stabbed to death. Mary prays as he dies and tells James to go into the light.

Now that MURDER is on the table, Brianna and Mary plot on how to get out of this alive. Troy brings the blondes down to the basement and ties them up. Mary prays, and Brianna cries. Troy passes out, and his wound isn’t looking as good as his abs! While he sleeps, Mary tells Brianna about her failed marriage and her struggles with infertility. They talk about believing in God, and Mary teaches Brianna how to pray.

They eventually get lotion out of Mary’s purse and slip their hands out of the rope restraints. She grabs some items from the basement, and I’m not quite sure what the plan is here. Mary dumps a water bottle into a bucket and fills it with bleach and vinegar. Mary screams, “GO,” and dumps the mixture on Troy, giving them a chance to escape. They lock Troy in the basement and run outside.

Mary and Brianna run to a neighbor, and they call the cops. The detective is familiar with Troy because he killed Brianna’s foster family and is a wanted criminal. Mary asks to take Brianna in until they can find her a new family. The detectives don’t think Troy will stay in town and is probably on the run.

Mary and Brianna go back to the church to see the reverend. Mary tells the reverend about James’ being murdered and how she prayed over his lifeless body. The reverend says James was lucky to have Mary send him home to Heaven. Mary and Brianna connect about horses and math, and try not to worry about Troy being MIA.

Tina stops by with her little dog and welcomes Brianna to the community. Tina asks Mary if she is okay, and God bless her because Tina is the only one who asked! While walking home, Tina notices someone in the woods and bravely goes to investigate. Troy attacks Tina and her little dog to lure the police guard to him. Troy kills the officer and takes his gun, heading inside to get Mary and Brianna next.

Troy is looking rough, and he tries to attack his daughter and Mary. When Brianna prays, he tells her that praying won’t help. Then Mary bashes Troy in the head with a candlestick in the living room and kills him.

Mary becomes Brianna’s legal guardian, and they plan to go to church! Good for them!

STRAY Thoughts

How many more Jesus movies do we have? I’m all for G.O.D./Higher Power in whatever religion, but these feel so shoehorned into a typical Lifetime movie.
