Nora, a marketing executive haunted by a gala-night murder and chilling threats, must face her darkest fears when her ailing mother attends the same masked charity event the following year, drawing her back into a killer’s ruthless game.
Recap/Wine Thoughts

The movie starts with Nora sauntering around the Leacy Gala and bumps into her friend Liz, who hosts the event. Nora is visiting town, taking care of her mother, who is sick with cancer. The event honors a local entrepreneur, and Nora’s friend, Naomi, secretly enters her into the contest. She is up against local and former high school rival Abigail. Nora isn’t really interested in winning and dances with a guy named Dom before wandering around the party again. Then Angela stumbles out into the crowd and is stabbed to death. Nora gets a text that it should have been her. The killer killed the wrong brunette.

One Year later, Nora has moved back to town and is looking for a job and an apartment while she takes care of her mother. She meets Liz and Dom at a cafe and is surprised to hear the Legacy Gala is still on, even after what happened last year. Dom keeps running into Nora. He opens up about his dead parents as a way to relate to Nora about her sick mother. It is a weird tactic, but Nora falls for it. (Liz seems jealous!)

Nora comes home and is surprised to see her ex-boyfriend Daniel hanging out with her mother. He is the police’s number one suspect because he was a bartender at the event and was covered in Angela’s blood. She also runs into Angela’s dad, who is holding a grudge against Nora, as if she were the one who stabbed her daughter. (He must not know that Nora was the intended target, and the only reason for the mix-up was their hair color.)
Someone breaks into the house and leaves a mask and a note that says, “Dance with me” on the dining room table. They call the police, who seem more interested in town gossip than SOLVING A MURDER.

Since she is trying to beat cancer, Nora’s mother wants to get out of the house and suggests going to the Legacy Gala. Nora is hesitant. Liz, on the other hand, encourages Nora’s mother to go to the event against Nora’s wishes.
Nora leaves her mother at home to go on a date with Dom and returns to find her mom in bed. Or so she thinks. She goes to the Legacy Gala after receiving a photo via text that is obviously her mother. Daniel helps Nora look for her mother, but they end up finding a shrine to Angela instead. Her father is there being creepy, and still no sign of Nora’s mother.

The killer traps Nora in a stairwell, but she manages to escape and runs into Dom. He helps Nora find her mother, who is passed out with no pulse, apparently poisoned. (Daniel gave her champagne.) Nora’s mom ends up in the hospital and survives. Nora cries by her mother’s bedside in a moving show of affection. Those tears turn to rage as Nora tries to solve the murder mystery herself.

Nora submits some DNA she has from scratching the attacker in the stairwell. While Liz, smartly, decides not to host the Legacy Gala anymore because it seems like it is cursed. Daniel visits Nora and her mother in the hospital, and Nora’s cellphone pings when Nora texts the killer back. She calls the police, and they arrest him.

Liz fakes shock, but that doesn’t stop the police from questioning her and Dom. It has only taken a year, but the police are finally doing some legwork. Daniel is released from police custody, and Liz visits him at his house. (or maybe bar?) It is nondescript. Liz pours a drink and adds a special ingredient. (Poison) Liz is bad. I knew it. Daniel is murdered next, and Liz admits she killed Angela.

Nora comes over to Dom’s house after visiting her mother and is surprised to find Lis there. Lis explains that she has been jealous of Nora her whole life, while pretending to be dating Dom. Nora notices the scratches on Lis’s shoulder, but it is too late. Lis knocks Nora out and tells her that she has ruined her life. Nora had it so easy, and Lis couldn’t stand that. (All of this while Dom is tied up in the kitchen.
Nora breaks free and tries to call 911, so Lis attacks her with a knife. There is a struggle that gets broken up with a cast-iron skillet, and then things move out to the front lawn. Lis is stabbed, and the police make an arrest.
Dom is saved, and Nora tells him she tried to save them; he is thankful.

A few months later, Nora has her own place, and her mother has recovered. Nora and Dom are dating and celebrate her new job. Everything is so easy for Nora, but not for Lis.
STRAY Thoughts
The actress who played Liz was giving Anna Kendrick energy. Right?
