When workaholic CEO Ella Neezer tries to skip Christmas by flying to Australia, she’s in for the flight of her life. Haunted by her past, present and future, she’s forced to confront the choices that led to her success yet left her flying solo. With the help of three quirky spirits and a surprise reunion with her ex, she might just rediscover the magic of Christmas – and the love she thought she’d lost. Starring Erin Krakow and Tyler Hynes.
Recap/Wine Thoughts
Erin Krakow plays a MEAN boss, and everyone hates her. Ella Neezer, oh boy. Ella Neezer has everyone at the ad agency working over Christmas with the note, “make it better,” while she travels from New York to Australia. (The longest flight, literally possible.) Bobbi, Ella’s assistant, is going with her on the journey and leaving her son, Tim, who is sickly.
Ella isn’t all hard outer shell. She is secretly reeling from a five-year-old breakup with her former fiancé, Jake. Her sister Fran calls to see if Ella is coming home for the holidays, but she is too busy. At the airport, Ella runs into Jake, and she tries to play it cool.
The flight is decked out for Christmas, much to Ella’s horror. Think singing Southwest-style flight attendants and a pilot pretending to be Santa. Ella drinks two glasses of champagne and passes out.
Marlene Jacobson appears in the airplane safety video and warns Ella Neezer that she will be visited by three ghosts that night, as the seatbelt signal beeps once. Ella Neezer is confused because she thought Marlene had it all and was a girl boss, but she was lonely.
The seatbelt tolls once, and the ghost of Christmas Past takes Ella Neezer out the emergency exit to show her young Ella Neezer in boarding school. Ella Neezer remembers how hard it was for her and her sister to be away from their family for the holidays, but Fran always knew how to cheer her up.
Next, we see college Ella meeting Jake and their instant connection. They study in the library, and he takes her to see a Christmas tree and gives her his scarf. (That she still has.) He talks about helping kids as a career, and she wants to plan vacations. They take a selfie, which is so 2008.
The ghost of Christmas past shows Ella how her relationship with Jake was negatively affected by her commitment to her career, and how she sacrificed everything to get ahead. It is lonely at the top. Jake and Ella argue, then she gives him his ring back. Jake tells Ella that he won’t stand in her way.
Then, Ella sees Bobbi struggling to take care of her sick son and pay his medical bills. Before Ella can see how it ends, she is sent back on the plane and ends up in the bathroom, wearing a life vest. Jake finds her in an awkward situation, and she tries to explain.
Now it is time for the ghost of Christmas present. He is very silly with adorable dimples and shows Ella how her co-workers and family think she sucks. Well, everyone but her sister Fran. We also see Jake at work, who hasn’t moved on from the breakup either. He follows a Christmas tradition with some college friends: going to a dive bar.
Finally, Ella sees Bobbi at home with her sick Tim, who is grateful to Ms. Neezer for giving him medicine, but he won’t make it another year.
Then it is time for the scariest ghost, the ghost of Christmas yet to come. He is the strong, silent type and loves to point. He is also an air marshal on the flight. Ella learns that her company has continued without her because she is dead, along with Tiny Tim.
Ella Neezer walks up, and the light has landed in Utah. It’s Christmas Day, and Francis lives in Utah. She invites Jake to join her for breakfast. He is suspicious, but goes along with it. Then she gives Bobbi a Christmas bonus and doubles her salary. Ella apologizes for being the worst and gives everyone on the flight vouchers from her company for a free hotel.
At breakfast, Ella tells Jake that she wanted to be self-sufficient and begs him to give her another Christmas chance. They slow dance and kiss. It is super sexy.
Ella spends the holiday with her family, and Bobbi makes it home to see Tim. God Bless us, Everyone!!!!
