Ella (Mason) is a charitable and spirited Newport socialite in 1905 who dreams of using her wealth to start a foundation to help others in town. After learning her father intends for her to become engaged to a man she’s never met at the upcoming Christmas Eve ball, Ella goes for a nighttime sail in her schooner to clear her head. Upon seeing a comet shoot across the sky, she wistfully wishes for a different life. Ella is shocked to suddenly find Nick (Brown), a sailor and local Newport historian, aboard her schooner and accuses him of being a stowaway. But Nick insists he owns the boat and a standoff ensues. Once on dry land, Ella realizes that somehow, she’s traveled from 1905 to 2025. As she spends time there and gets a glimpse at what her future in 1905 appears to be, she becomes reluctant to return, especially since she and Nick have grown close and she now knows how true love feels. But the legacy Ella built in her time – and the course of Newport’s history – risks being erased the longer she stays in the present, so the two plot a course for her trip back through time. But what awaits her at home is even more surprising that what she found in the future. Starring Ginna Claire Mason and Wes Brown.
Recap/Wine Thoughts
The movie starts off in the 1900s in Newport, Road Island. It’s got horse-drawn carriages and a blonde named Ella. She is like the Elle Woods of her time and helps plan the Christmas Ball, where her arranged marriage will be announced. Ella doesn’t want a big wedding; she wants to start a charity! When her dad says it is a bad idea, Ella storms off on her own sailboat and wishes for a new life on a comet.
Meanwhile, in 2025, Newport, a former Coast Guard officer, receives a distress call. He goes to check it out, and Ella ends up on his boat/or he ends up on her boat. Ella is perplexed and freaked out by modern times. Specifically, the inflatable snowmen from the future. Nick tries to fill Ella in, but she can’t get over women wearing pants.
Elle wants to go home, but her house is a museum. The museum curator calls her uncle, the police chief, and plays along with Ella. Ella gives a tour. She is comforted by the estate, but also disturbed by the changes. Ella can’t understand why people care about her and her house. That she is a historical figure worth all the hubbub. Ella is impressed with the lady boss. She, of course, can’t sleep in the museum, so they book her an Bed and Breakfast.
Nick and the people who work in the museum, Christine and Frances, try to figure out what is going on. Ella is very convincing, and they think Ella isn’t crazy. Ella is impressed with everything, down to an oat milk latte in a paper cup. Nick takes Ella to the town Christmas Tree lighting, our first of the year.
They realize that Ella can’t know about her past because it would erase her from history, and if she doesn’t return to where she came from, she could disappear forever. Ella can’t hear spoilers about herself. That doesn’t stop her from trying to use a laptop to learn about herself.
Nick tries to figure out when the next comet is coming; it is Christmas Eve! Nick tells Ella about a Christmas boat parade, and even though he doesn’t participate, he looks forward to it every year. They walk around town and talk about past relationships. Nick is falling for Ella, but it isn’t as simple as that.
Ella’s history continues to disappear. So Nick shows Ella It’s A Wonderful Life. (AKA the only Christmas movie to exist in a Hallmark movie.) They find ANOTHER guy who has been stuck in 2025. He has been waiting for the Christmas comet. MAN, this is boring exposition.
Ella thinks Adam is the man she should marry. Even if there isn’t a spark. He doesn’t want to go back and loves his life. Adam tells Ella that things will work out. Ella thinks she will stay too. Nick tells her that the right thing to do is to go back to her home. Then they make out, which is a bad idea.
It is the night of the ball, and Ella shows up in a dress from Nordstrom Rack, and it shows.
There is some talk of fan signals and kissing.
Nick dances with Ella before taking her to the boat and finding the comet. The house is starting to fade away— it is an emergency! Not so much that Ella doesn’t have time for an outfit change. She heads out on the boat, and Nick gives her an ornament from the future that reads, “with you, always.’
Ella sails out into the night and makes another wish on a comet. She knows what love is and is ready to share it with others. She gets ready for the first Christmas Ball and comes down in a dress that is NOT from Nordstrom Rack. Rex Graffton shows up, and it turns out to be Nick, somehow. Don’t ask questions.
They dance, and the modern times are restored. They kiss. The end! Merry Christmas, time travelers.
Side Note/Stray Thoughts
They have found a way to use Ginna Claire Mason to her full potential as an actress. She is very genuinely sweet here.
