Synopsis (via Lifetime)

As Dr. Ryan secretly supplies her with surgical-grade drugs to keep her compliant and submissive, Sarah’s life spirals. When tragedy hits, Sarah’s mother and sister begin investigating the doctor, uncovering shocking and disturbing truths.

Recap/Wine Thoughts

Close-up of a man wearing glasses, looking distressed and emotional, with a serious expression.

A nerdy doctor, played by hunky Luke Macfarlane in glasses, calls 911 after finding his wife, Sarah Harris, unresponsive. The police and paramedics arrive. They are surprised to see Sarah Jane’s mom and sister, Rachel, scream at him and blame him for drugging her and making it look like a suicide.

A smiling man with a muscular build stands in front of a mirror, wearing only his lower garment, with water droplets on his skin. The setting appears to be a bathroom.

18 Months Earlier, Luke Macfarlane is jogging and shirtless… thank God! He is a prominent myofascial doctor. He flirts with his patients as they are put under anesthesia. (Pretty sure this happened to Rose on The Golden Girls.) It isn’t long before Dr. James texts his patient and offers her a surgical assistant position.

The workplace is inappropriate because Dr. James Ryan flirts with Sarah the whole time and gives her undeserved opportunities, even though she literally has no experience. It seems like a good place for a working montage.

A male doctor in a white lab coat wearing a Santa hat and colorful Christmas lights around his neck, engaging in conversation with a woman with blonde hair.

Christmas 2020, we see Luke Macfarlane in a Santa hat, which isn’t a first for this Hallmark hunk. He buys her a fancy necklace, and Sarah’s mother tells her daughter to keep the relationship professional. After her sister kills himself in front of her, James rushes to help the family and take care of Sarah. He starts giving her medications on the side and IV’s at night to “help her sleep.” This guy is taking playing doctor to a whole new level.

Two female healthcare professionals in navy blue scrubs, one with blonde hair looking serious and the other with dark hair smiling slightly in the background.

Sarah’s mom thinks it is weird that Sarah is dating her much older boss. Still, Sarah insists she knows what she is doing and is excited that the good doctor is going to take her to the beach for Valentine’s Day. Is Sarah randomly crowned Miss Petite Maryland in a beauty pageant?

Dr. James invites Sarah to move in with him and wants to take her family on a vacation to Florida. However, they still don’t support the relationship. It stresses Sarah out, and she starts taking Benzos to calm her nerves. She starts wearing love sleeves and acting strange.

During the Florida trip, Sarah is withdrawn and has no appetite. Instead of going to the beach, Sarah naps in her room and cries. Her sister and mom can tell something is wrong. Sarah admits that Dr. James is more in love with him than she is with him.

Two women looking shocked or scared while standing indoors with a view of greenery outside.

A week later, Sarah is sick from work, but in reality she is being pumped full of barbiturates from a pharmacy of drugs stolen from Dr. Jame’s practice. Rachel takes pictures of everything and wants to take evidence to the police. Dr. James tries to explain himself to Sarah’s mom, but they take her out of the home and are horrified to see bruises on Sarah’s body.

Sarah goes through withdrawal, and since she has a history of mental health issues and looks like a junkie, Tina decides to treat Sarah at home and nurse her back to health. Sarah promises to cut off contact with Dr. James, but he works his way back into Sarah’s life. Sarah decides to move back in with Dr. James. Tina insists that Sarah check in every day, and Dr. James gives her a set of keys.

A woman in a black dress is hugging a man in a light blue shirt in a kitchen, with various items scattered on the counter.

It doesn’t take long for Sarah to quit her job and stop messaging her family. Rachel keys into the home and finds it a mess with used needles everywhere. Sarah is hooked up to an IV in her bed and is drugged out of her mind.

Tina confronts Dr. James, and they argue in his car. She slaps him across the face and tells him to get it together. Dr. James wants to move to Florida, but Tina tells him that if he moves, she will go to the police and turn him in. Sarah tells her mom that she is ruining Christmas and just needs some space.

A woman in a red bathrobe sits at a table, focused on her decorated laptop. Natural light streams in through a window, casting a soft glow in a cozy living room.

Sarah’s brother is in a car accident and ends up brain dead. Sarah has a wake-up call and tries to clean up her life. Sarah accuses Dr. James of getting her addicted to drugs and threatens to move out. Still, Dr. James emotionally manipulates Sarah into staying. Sarah tells her mom she is going back to Montgomery College and starting over without Dr. James.

Back to the present day, Rachel gives detectives proof to put Dr. James behind bars. Rachel finds Sarah belongings in the trash and goes through old journals. Rachel guesses the password and compiles 200 pages of evidence in messages. The detective thinks Rachel has a case and agrees to press charges against Dr.James.

Dr. James shows up at the funeral, and he is arrested.
