Synopsis (via Lifetime)
When Meredith and her husband go to have dinner with their neighbor on the next farm over, he introduces them to his visiting niece. But as the evening progresses, Meredith begins to suspect that this young woman isn’t his niece, but his captive.
Recap/Wine Thoughts
The movie starts on a stormy night, low-key my favorite kind of night. It isn’t going to be the favorite for a diner waitress just getting home from work, yapping on the phone with her friend. As she chats, she begins to notice things out of place. Someone grabs her from behind while she blows a bubble of gum.
Cut to a couple with some issues. Meredith and Drew don’t have power or running water, and Meredith was locked in a car trunk at some point? It’s best not to ask too many questions. I think Meredith was kidnapped when she was a teen by another teenage boy with a gun? Meredith is suffering from serious PTSD, which she calls “Being in the trunk.” Drew suggests a trip out of town to visit their friend Arne.
Arne is excited to have visitors and introduces his meek niece, Sadie. Sadie has a wrapped wrist and seems like an abused woman. Meredith’s red flags go up, and she asks Sadie if everything is okay. Arne won’t even let Sadie answer for herself. When Meredith sees a locked knife drawer, she knows something is up. Sadie confirms this by passing by quickly saying, “Help me, not my uncle.”
Goddammit, Meredith misunderstands and is like, why wouldn’t I help your uncle? I think Sadie was trying to say HELP ME, HE’S NOT MY UNCLE! Sadie actually knows Meredith because she is infamous in the true-crime story of her life. She was kidnapped by a classmate and forced to do an 11-day crime spree, or else he would kill her parents, whom he had already killed. Crime junkies would love this case.
After dinner about the kidnapping, the four sit down for game night. Arne gets upset that Meredith wins again. She is good at puzzles and even does lateral thinking puzzles. (Which are so annoying for this horizontal thinker.) Sadie and Meredith totally bond over being like minds, much to Arne’s annoyance. Once Arne catches on, she pulls Sadie away to talk in private. Meredith listens outside the door and hears them arguing.
The girls go to the bathroom together, and Sadie tells Meredith that she was kidnapped and is being held captive by Arne. Instead of escaping, Meredith tells Sadie that she is good at playing games and will outsmart Arne. Or she could just call the police, or at least tell Drew.
Instead, Meredith confronts Arne, and it is BOLD. Arne breaks it to Meredith that Sadie is just messing with Meredith for fun. He says Sadie is a troubled teen who recently returned to his family. She was expelled from school after a fight with another girl and an attempt at self-harm. Arne apologizes for Sadie’s behavior, but Meredith still insists he unlock the knife drawer and give her one. (Which he surprisingly does.) Sadie is forced to apologize.
Wait WUT?!?!?!! Is the waitress locked in the shed?
The movie stalls out for a while, retreading board games and reiterating that Meredith is a total game shark and smarter than everyone. She sneaks away from the game, unlocks the shed, and tries to unlock the waitress’s chains, but someone sneaks up behind Meredith.
It’s Arne. A fight breaks out, and Sadie butts Arne with a shotgun. There is a struggle over the gun; Meredith stabs Arne in the back. Drew runs into the chaos and ends up shot. Then Sadie stabs Arne to death, and they rush to get Drew to the hospital, leaving the waitress behind. But then the cars won’t start.
Meredith runs to get help, just like she did when she was a teenager. She calls for help. I think we watch the entire 911 call. Then, in a twist that isn’t surprising but is told most ridiculously, a Christmas card arrives in the mail and reveals that Sadie is actually Arne’s niece.
Sadie pulls out a gun on Meredith, and Meredith isn’t intimidated. Meredith tells Sadie what she knows in a very Colombo way that sums up the movie. Meredith tells Sadie about the mistakes she made building the ruse. The police pull up, and Sadie runs out screaming for help, but it is just some flashing LED lights that Meredith set up.
Meredith pistol-whips Sadie and ties her up with Christmas lights?!?! Was this supposed to be set at Christmas time, and did I miss it? I thought it was April.
Drew and Meredith survive and have sexy time to celebrate! Good for them!
STRAY Thought
This wasn’t told very well; flashing between Meredith’s kidnapping and Sadie’s kidnapping and drawing story parallels was overwrought.
