Synopsis (via Lifetime)
A devastating act of sexual violence forever changes the life of 12-year-old Roxane Gay. As she grapples with the lasting trauma, Roxane turns to food as a means of survival, beginning a lifelong journey to understand her body and reclaim her voice.
Recap/Wine Thoughts
Roxane Gay tells her story in her own words; she wrote this movie.

The movie starts with a 12-year-old Roxane moving into a predominantly white suburb and navigating normal pre-teen things, highlighting themes of racial and social identity. She deals with an older bully neighbor named Christopher and plays World Dominations with a kid named Micky. This isn’t The Summer I Turned Pretty.
Christopher shows Roxane playboys, and she is uncomfortable. He is only nice to Roxane when he is pushing the envelope and calls her his special girlfriend, but at school he ignores her. The back-and-forth confuses Roxane, and Christopher emotionally manipulates her into pushing her boundaries further and further.

Christopher takes “Foxy Roxy” to a shed in the woods. He has told the other boys at school about her promiscuity, and they gang-rape her in the woods and then laugh about it at school, writing “Slut” on her locker. Micky helps her clean her locker and asks Roxane if she told her parents or went to the cops. Roxane doesn’t want anyone to know and asks Mikey not to tell the adults.

Roxane doesn’t yet understand the difference between sex and rape. Still, she knows she has sinned according to her religion and starts to mask her shame by going inwards and binge eating at night after starving herself all day. This self-destructive behavior reflects her emotional turmoil and desire for control.
One area where she excels is English class, where she comments on literature and writes. She goes to a fancy boarding school, and another young, handsome white boy starts talking to her. Roxane is prickly to him and doesn’t want history to repeat itself.
When she comes home for break, her parents are concerned about her weight gain. They don’t understand what is going on because Roxane has good grades and wanted to go to boarding school. They take her to a doctor, who puts her on a liquid diet, and Roxane is resistant but eventually complies and loses the weight she gained over the summer.

The English teacher reads one of Roxane’s stories and is concerned. He asks her to speak with the school counselor, who gives her a book called The Courage to Heal.
Roxane gets into Yale, of all places, but she can’t really feel joy because she feels so pressured by everyone around her. Her parents want her to do premed, so Roxane does as she is told, even though she wants to major in English. She makes friends with her roommates in college, but continues to eat to mask her feelings. Roxane decides she needs a break and asks her parents, who are not into that.

A man on the internet flies Roxane to Arizona and tries to get her to see herself IRL as she does online and in her writing. She leaves for two months without telling her parents. Her male friend tells her she has to go back to her life because she is destined for greater things.
We cut to grown Roxane, a queer, tattooed writer working at a university. She meets a chemistry teacher, Melanie, and they start dating. Melanie is worried about appearances and doesn’t like PDA with Roxane because she is too big. It is the secret relationship all over again.

While getting her PhD, a handsome bearded man, Gareth, asks Roxane out on a date, and she responds with her typical prickliness. Gareth sees Roxane through her writing and tries to get her to talk better about herself and her body. Roxane thinks he is lying to her, but he isn’t. He is a good guy and even gets her armless chairs at restaurants.
Bad Feminist is released, becomes an NYT bestseller, and her parents are upset that Roxane didn’t come to them sooner. They tell her that family can talk about anything. They convince her to go to therapy.

In therapy, Roxane works through her trauma and becomes one with her body and herself. She continues to release best-selling novels and still resonates with readers today.
STRAY Thought
How cool is it that Roxane Gay wrote a Lifetime movie? I’ve always known she is a real one, but this is like another level. She is one of us! Yay!
