Synopsis (via Lifetime)
When Zoe wakes up to find her husband murdered beside her in bed with no memory of anyone entering their home, she becomes the prime suspect. To clear her name, she must uncover the real killer and stop them before they finish what they started.
Recap/Wine Thoughts
The movie starts on a stormy night, and a mother named Monica frantically packs her bags and takes her young daughter, Dia, to safety in a motorboat. (Is that really safer during a thunderstorm?) Derrick chases after them and tells them it isn’t funny.
10 years later. Marcus helps his neighbor Mona fix up her new house. Mona and her teenage daughter Denise are starting over again. Are they Monica and Dia in witness protection? Probably. Mona talks with the landlord, Josh, and learns the previous tenant was evicted. Josh gets a call from a realtor, Danielle, asking who moved in, which could blow their cover.
Vivica A. Fox shows up as Mona’s boss in a fierce lavender pantsuit. Mona is overwhelmed with house chores, even though her movers will be a week late and the new home is practically empty.
Realtor Danielle rebrands herself as Renee Walker, a local housemaid. She offers her services to Mona, and Mona decides the help would be nice. Vivica A. Fox checks Danielle/Renee’s references, and the man on the other end of the line is Derrick. She even offers to pay for the first week.
They tour the house, and there is a cleaning montage, of course. Danielle/Renee wastes no time snooping through Denise’s iPad and sending pictures to Derrick. Danielle/Renee awkwardly ask questions about Mona’s hometown and where she lived before. Denise has a bad feeling and tells her mom that they shouldn’t just bring a stranger into their lives after checking one reference. Honestly, she has a point!
Mona decides her daughter is right and lets Danielle/Renee go. That doesn’t stop Danielle/Renee from sneaking into the house and installing some pen nanny cams. Since the house is empty, they would be fairly obvious, but Danielle/Renee seems pleased with her camera placement.
Marcus catches her as she leaves and promises to tell Mona about Danielle/Renee’s unplanned visit. Danielle/Renee comes back later and asks Marcus not to say anything. He goes back to his workout and is taken out with a dumbbell.
The cameras start interfering with the Wi-Fi, and Danielle/Renee hacks into Mona’s email. The hacking feels targeted, and Denise feels like someone is after them. The movie goes WAY into detail about hacking, malware, and the call coming from inside the house. All the fingers point to Danielle/Renee. Vivica A. Fox offers to connect Mona with a detective named James, who sweeps the house as if he were looking for a poltergeist. James tells them to change their passwords and file a police report, but Mona doesn’t want to involve the cops.
Derrick shows up as a potential client and Vivica A. Fox connects him with her top employee, Mona. Mona is shell-shocked and creeped out when Derrick whispers in her ear that she looks exactly the same. Vivica A. Fox notices something is off and pieces things together. Mona comes clean about her abusive husband, whom she ran away from.
Vivica A. Fox tells Mona that she is there for Mona as a boss and a friend. Mona explains that Derrick started out like the perfect husband until he became hyper-controlling. Mona had to start over to get away and protect herself and her daughter. Vivica A. Fox is not afraid and connects Mona with a family lawyer. They will find a legal path out of this.
James uses his police background to discover that Danielle/Renee has a past with Derrick, and that they are working together. He finds a shell company they own together and goes to the address on the filing. It is another abandoned house. Danielle/Renee sneaks into the backseat of his car and syringes him in the neck.
Denise comes home and finds someone in the house; it is Derrick pretending to be the IT guy working on the router. He tells Denise that she grew up so well without a father, then charges at her.
Derrick ties Denise up, and Mona rushes home to try to stop him. Mona tells Derrick that he is dangerous and explains that she had to end the cycle of abuse and start over without him. Then Danielle/Renee shows up, and not only is she his accomplice, but she is also his new wife. They just want to be one big, happy family.
The police sirens blare in the background, and the psycho couple runs off. Denise and Mona now have a strong case against him after he breaks in and captures Denise. Ms. Vivica A. Fox sums it up best: “That was surprisingly anticlimactic.” At least she includes herself when saying the titular line this time. “WE chose the Wrong Housemaid.”
Marcus survives, and despite having zero chemistry, Mona agrees to have dinner with him, and she even has to cook the meal! Mona, you deserve better than that.
STRAY Thought
Hunks were lacking here, no shade to Marcus! He did his best.
I wonder if the movers ever came!
