Gentry Wade (Nikki DeLoach), daughter of late country music icon Jett Wade – half of the famed duo Winters & Wade – abandoned her dream of a songwriting career and distanced herself from her father’s legacy following his tragic accident 30 years prior. When the Grand Ole Opry invites her to represent Jett at their centennial celebration at Christmas, she’s hesitant to return to the place steeped in bittersweet memories. Encouraged by her good friends, Gentry visits the Opry and, while seated in one of the vaunted venue’s oak church pews, is suddenly transported to 1995. Gentry’s lifelong friend Mac (Kristoffer Polaha) a country music talent manager, finds himself in 1995 as well. Thanks to some Christmas magic, Gentry gets precious time with her father, creative inspiration to finish the song she began decades earlier as a teen and learns surprising answers to questions about her father that have followed her for the last three decades. Starring Nikki DeLoach and Kristoffer Polaha.
Cameos by: Bill Anderson, Brad Paisley, Dailey & Vincent, Drew Baldridge, Jamey Johnson, Maggie Baugh, Megan Moroney, Mickey Guyton, Pam Tillis, Rhett Akins, Riders in the Sky, Suzy Bogguss, Tigirlily Gold, T Graham Brown
Recap/Wine Thoughts
The Movie starts at the Grand Old Ope Live. Rob Mayes is in a country duo with Luke Benward called The Winters in Wayde. They were a country legend duo on the brink of a world tour. The Opry Christmas special was their final performance together. Next, we flash forward to meet his daughter, Gentry, who is friends with a manager named Mac, who wants to sign her to become a star like her father.
Rita also wants Gentry to visit the Grand Old Opry to represent her father for the 100th anniversary. We get a tour, and I honestly can’t tell the Hallmark actors from the country stars.
After sitting on a pew on stage, Gentry goes back in time or another dimension and sees her father as a young star and Rita too! The Opry/Christmas magic inspires Gentry to pursue her lifelong dream of writing Christmas music. Gentry tells Cam about her time travel, and he is like, You’re crazy.
Back in the 90s, Gentry is mistaken for a record producer named Jenny McCall. Cam follows her and helps her figure out why he dad and his bandmate broke up. It’s because the record label AKA Jenny wants a different songwriter. Other than her DAD. He gets pissed and tells her to leave him alone.
Gentry cries to Cam about her love of writing music, specifically a Christmas song she never finished because her dad died. Cam makes her laugh and charms Gentry into singing the incomplete song. Her dad overhears and is inspired. Later, he invites Jenny to work on the song with him. Gentry’s dream is coming true.
The songwriting session goes well, and Mac records it on his cellphone, which will probably break the space-time continuum. (Haven’t they seen Back to the Future?!?!?)
AN OLD FASHIONED BAKING MONTAGE HAPPENS. (No flour fight tho.)
It’s two hours before the big performance, and Gentry has a heart-to-heart with everyone. Her dad, Cam, and Luke Benward, who has figured out she is lying about who she really is. He tells her that he is going solo and ditching her dad. He invites Gentry to write on his next album.
Cam encourages Gentry to stay and live her dream. Then he accidentally sits on the pew and flashes back to the present. He tries to sit on the pew to go back to 1995, but it doesn’t work.
Gentry is fine, having a genuinely touching last moment with her dead father. She flashes back to the present and performs the song she wrote with her dad.
