Isaiah Heyward last appeared on Broadway almost 10 years ago. Since then, getting back on Broadway has been a challenge. To escape the grind of the city and re-evaluate his life, Isaiah visits his sister, Jess, and teenage niece, Aurora, in upstate New York for the holidays. But his yuletide respite is interrupted when he learns Aurora’s high school may have to cancel their annual Christmas musical because they can’t find a director. With a nudge from Aurora and the school’s guidance counselor, Lilly-Anne Brigente, Isaiah decides to save the Christmas show and jumps in as director. Isaiah’s situation gets a little more complicated when he learns that an influential Broadway producer’s daughter is in the school production, so Isaiah decides to cast himself as the lead in order to land a part in an upcoming Broadway show. But while the curtain rises on rehearsals and the Christmas Eve opening night fast approaches, Isaiah finds some Christmas surprises of his own, as he stumbles upon an unexpected romance with Lilly-Anne, creates an unanticipated bond with his students, reassesses his priorities and ultimately discovers that the greatest holiday gift is found when love, family, and friendship take centerstage.
Recap/Wine Thoughts
The movie starts with a Rudolph musical, off-off-Broadway. Isaiah Heyward wrote, directed, and stars in the one-man show. No one shows up, but it’s okay because he has one more shot. He is up for a big Broadway musical called Glitter and Grace. If it doesn’t go well, Isaiah might go home for Christmas. When he gets fired from his day job as a Christmas caroler, he goes home to Hancock with his tail between his legs.
Jess, his sister, picks him up from the airport and takes him to her house. Jess is starting a teacup-and-candle business (she has a website!), which sounds like a bad idea. Jess is recently divorced and resentful of her brother for not coming home in three years, after their parents died.
Isaiah goes to the school to pick up his niece, Aurora, and he gets roped into directing the Christmas show after the drama teacher quits. Another teacher, Lilly-Anne, is set to be his Staff Supervisor. Aurora is set to be the assistant director. Isaiah is in over his head and still reeling from his fleeting success, but is excited to learn that the producer of Glitter and Grace is a parent at the school.
To impress the producer, Isaiah cast HIMSELF as the lead. He just recycles his Rudolph script and changes the name. He still has to hold auditions and needs more guys. Isaiah makes a kid named Stephen audition after he insults the theatre.
Once the show is cast, but they hate the script. Isaiah and Lilly-Anne work late on the script, then take a walk through the Christmas lights. Isaiah says he is surprised that Lilly-Anne is single. Ugh! Gross.

Then, shopping for a Christmas tree. (They pick a Charlie Brown one.)
To boost the kids’ confidence, they all go Christmas Caroling, and the understudy for the lead nails an operatic harmony.
Everyone bands together to get the set built and the aisles decorated, which is undoubtedly a fire hazard.
Isaiah goes on for the dress rehearsal and impressed the producer. He gets invited to audition, but it is during the Christmas show. The cast revolts against him and sees through his selfish plan. Isaiah still goes on that audition tho!
He eventually changes his mind and returns for the show; he encourages the producer to cast his daughter in the lead role. The play looks terrible, and the lyrics are cringeworthy, but the crowd sounds like they are into it. The play even gets a standing ovation.
Lilly-Anne and Isaiah celebrate on stage and kiss as the snow machine kicks on after being faulty the whole production. Damn it, if Isaiah doesn’t say the movie’s title, it is an automatic pour-it-up for me.
Side Note/Stray Thoughts
“Makes me as nervous as a snowflake in a room full of space heaters” was a line in this movie.
Theatre People are the WORST.
