When an investigative reporter returns home to attend her father’s funeral, she uncovers shocking truths–not only is she adopted, but her mother is a powerful madam who may be responsible for her father’s death.
Recap/Wine Thoughts
The movie starts in a women’s prison, and it looks more like OZ than Orange is the New Black. People are getting off-ed in this prison. Hits are being taken out.
Lauren, an in-shape journalist who loves kickboxing, gets a distressing call, not from prison, but from her mother. Elizabeth tells her daughter about her father’s sudden death from a heart attack. The family is well-connected and knows the governor and the mayor. Lauren was close to her father, but not her mother, who has always been more focused on appearances.
Lauren suffers from heartburn and goes to the family doctor, who lets it slip that she is adopted. Since Lauren is an award-winning journalist, she looks into her past. Lauren finds her birth certificate, which lists her mother as Jean Doe. She tries to check public records and meets another investigative reporter, Chad.
Inexplicably, Lauren and Chad have a cook-off on the 4th of July. They make Lasagna and taramisu. Lauren tells him about her adoption and asks him to help look into things.
The movie features some country people running a prostitution ring out of a motel, with banjo music strumming in the background every time.
Lauren and Chad find the motel and talk to a guy named Vinny. He tells Lauren that her birth mother is in the women’s prison, and we meet Jean Rochelle.
It comes to light that Lauren’s mother killed her father, I’m not really sure why, or what, or where, or when. Jean Rochelle is released from women’s prison, so that is good? Oh, wait. No she isn’t released because Lauren’s mother uses her connections to keep Jean Rochelle locked up. Damn. This movie sucks.
The end.
STRAY Thoughts
Lasagna on the 4th of July? No.
