Synopsis (via Lifetime)

A prosecutor condemns her husband as the Millwood Murderer. Years later, as his execution nears, their daughter disappears after finding evidence of his innocence – and the real killer still free.

Recap/Wine Thoughts

The movie starts on a street where a teen named Danika is being followed by someone in a black car and strangled to death. Her cellphone is nearby, and her friend Brooke hears the whole thing.

Four years later, Brooke keeps a dream journal and is still uncovering details from the traumatic events of the evening. Her mom is former Destiny’s Child star Letoya Luckett. She testified against her husband in Danika’s trial and put him on death row.

Brooke spends time with Brooke’s dad, Alexander, as he opens a new restaurant named Danika in her memory. Brooke still visits her dad in jail and has been working for years to clear his name. She has boxes of evidence and her own memories that could exonerate him, if only she could remember.

As Brookes spends more time on her dad’s case than on college, and Letoya Luckett gets into an argument with her daughter about priorities, Brookes storms and goes to a secret storage locker. While she is looking through files, someone kidnaps Brooke.

Letoya Luckett goes to a hot detective August, who isn’t worried about Brooke going MIA. Brooke has been in touch with the police over the past few months and has discussed her theories with them. After they brushed her off, the detectives suspect Brooke faked her own kidnapping to get their attention and take her theories more seriously due to her dad’s impending execution.

Of course, Brooke ISN’T faking. She is being held in a creepy dungeon and tied to a folding chair. The masked assaulter takes a photo and sends it out to prove they are not playing around.

Letoya Luckett is not playing either and is using her prosecutorial resources to figure out what is going on. Alexander helps her investigate and break into a suspect’s house and find pictures of teenage girls on his computer. The guy comes home and shoots at them with a rifle. Which is pretty suspicious.

By chance, the stress brings Letoya Luckett and Alexander together romantically. They kiss in a moment of weakness and then get back to trying to find Brooke. Letoya Luckett ends up in an abandoned brewery and calls Detective August. She thinks students were having inappropriate interactions with Coach Buchann.

While locked in a deep freezer, the kidnapper unmasks himself, and it is Alexander. Brooke has been held captive in his restaurant. What are his motives? Don’t worry, he explains everything to Letoya Luckett in a villain monologue. He was obsessed with a teenage friend of his daughter. He “accidentally” killed his daughter when she found out and threatened to expose him. Letoya Luckett listens calmly and waits for her moment to flee and save her daughter.

Letoya Luckett takes him out with a meat tenderizer, and the police arrive on the scene.

Three months later. Booke’s dad is free from jail and off death row. He forgives Letoya Luckett for testifying against him, which is BIG of him.

Letoya Luckett gets a call about her next case, and now I’m worried she has a three-picture deal with Lifetime.

  1. ooh this was good. It left a bad taste in my mouth the end result. I didn’t suspect him until the very end. Funnily enough I started finding the cop sexy as soon as I started to suspect him. His buttoned-up neck tattoo self, had me equal parts thinking him guilty and equal parts liking him. LOL! I got Daniel Craig James Bond vibes from him. Anyway…Latoya Luckett needs to be in more mainstream movies. She is very good and keeps the movies she is in entertaining. Definitely a pour up for me. But again, that end confession scene was stomach churning.
