Three years after escaping a notorious child abductor known as the “Carousel Killer,” former investigative journalist Parker Beaumont has rebuilt her life as a university lecturer near her brother’s family. But when disturbing symbols from the past-carousel music boxes–start appearing, and her sister-in-law begins acting strangely, Parker suspects someone is targeting her again. Though the killer remains in prison, Parker’s instincts say the threat is real and closer than anyone thinks. As fear ripples through her quiet suburban world, she’s pulled back into an investigation that forces her to confront buried trauma and a chilling possibility: the past may not be done with her-or her family.
Recap/Wine Thoughts
The movie begins on a carousel where a woman is struggling for her life. She is chloroformed by the “Carousel Killer,” who is the least menacing of the serial killers.

Professor Parker is enjoying a fresh start as a criminology professor AND an aunt, who recently moved back to town to help her brother. David and his wife, Kate, need help around the house. Parker is dating a guy named Chris, but it seems the neighbor, Harvey, with the lemon tree, has a thing for her.
Parker goes on a date with Chris and can’t help but share details about the case that caused her career pivot. The Carousel Killer was her case, and she caught him in a Carousel. He was arrested and has been sending threatening letters from jail.

Kate and David try to get the details of Parker’s date, but they keep getting interrupted by Kate’s phone going off continuously. Kate tries to laugh it off, but it is weird!
The neighbor, Harvey, turns up dead, and a creepy guy in a cowboy hat starts lurking around. Kate looks through old files. Could she have gotten the wrong guy? (The cowboy turns out to be a PI, and he is murdered next.)
Kate decides to bring the kids to Parker’s house because she feels creeped out by everything, and she should! The sisters-in-law decompress over some wine, and Parker asks if everything is going on between Kate and David. She says going back to work has been tough.

Parker comes home, finds a Carousel music box in her kitchen, and calls the cops. She thinks an obsessed fan is a copycat. While she is on a date with Chris, they notice they are being followed.

Next, a wrapped present shows up on Kate and David’s doorstep. It is a SNOWGLOBE Carousel this time. The killer is coming after Parker’s family.

Parker has no other choice but to go to jail and talk with the man himself. The conversation isn’t really productive, and he is pulling his best Hannibal Lecter.
Kate doesn’t show up for after-school pickup, and Parker steps in. A scar-faced guy comes to the door looking for Kate, and he bangs on the door. She calls the police, maybe for the 10th time in this movie, and files a report. David comes home and shows no concern about the whole thing. He actually blames Parker.

Parker tracks down Kate, whose real name is Alyssa, who has been in hiding because an abusive boyfriend tracked her down. Kate/Alyssa plans to make herself a target to save her family from the dangerous killer. (Calvin, the scar-faced man.)

Calvin traps Kate and Parker in a cabin and holds them at gunpoint. Kate grabs the gun and shoots Calvin. She killed Calvin’s brother and did whatever she needed to survive. Kate met David and started a new life, but Parker kept digging. Kate planted the music boxes and killed everyone. She even tried to run Parker over!

As Kate is doing the heavy lifting in a villain monologue that does a lot of back-explaining. The cops arrive just in time to arrest Kate before she kills anyone else.

Parker and her Brother mourn the loss of the perfect sister-in-law.
