Synopsis (via Lifetime)
After her last heart transplant fails, a young woman turns down her boyfriend’s proposal and disappears, prompting a race to uncover the truth behind her disappearance before her heart gives out.
Recap/Wine Thoughts
Maria has a heart transplant and a nasty scar. (I can relate! I had open heart surgery in 2003 AND 2005!) She is prohibited from drinking coffee or alcohol, but she does manage to book a commercial and is an actress. Her musician boyfriend is supportive and goes with her to her doctor’s appointment, which is true love. He proposes while they eat hamburgers. (Not Mediterranean diet approved!) Marie is reluctant to commit because her heart isn’t taking and she is on the list for another transplant.
As she leaves her day job through a sketchy back alley, Maria notices an unmarked van and turns the other way. The van follows her as she walks home, so Marie texts her boyfriend that she is on her way and takes a shortcut, but the white van finds her. Someone kidnaps Maria and drags her into the van while she struggles for her life. Maria wakes up chained in a wooden room.
Then we cut to a cop named Chloe Jackson; she is partnered with veteran Vicky Sanchez, who is hard-boiled and specializes in missing girls in Seattle. They look into Maria’s case. They start with the boyfriend, Noah. He tells Chloe that Maria was on her way home for dinner and never showed up. He is insistent that Maria was abducted, but the failed proposal is a red flag for detectives.
This movie loves spaghetti, and everyone eats it for some reason for dinner. We see flashes of Detective Sanchez’s son at a party with some teenagers, but then the movie cuts back to the present. Detective Sanchez is the one who kidnapped Marie and has her locked in the basement, and on the menu for day three dinner is, you guessed it. Spaghetti.
Maria has no relationship with her family and was adopted; she does have a sister, and Detective Chloe tracks down that angle instead. Detective Sanchez is MIA because it is the anniversary of her son’s death. He died suddenly on his birthday, and he unalived himself. Ouch!
There is someone on the other side of the wall, and Maria tells him they will get out of this situation. He has Detective Sanchez’s son’s liver. Maria tries every trick in the book, even breaking her thumb to escape. It is no use; Detective Sanchez isn’t letting her go anywhere. The heart that was transplanted into Maria belongs to Detective Sanchez’s son Gabriel.
Detective Chloe works an alcoholic hunk in the office; he drinks on the job, and she declines when he offers because she is pregnant. She is taken off the case in favor of Detective Sanchez, who is more high-profile. Then she gets a call from Maria’s long-lost sister and is back on the case. Unofficially. When Detective Sanchez finds out, she is pissed and doesn’t want anyone solving this case.
Maria finds a letter about reliving life a million times, and it seems like it is an intentional death. She also finds a gun and tries to shoot her way out of a sliding glass door. This girl is doing the most and getting nowhere.
Detective Sanchez cuts Maria’s hair and dyes it black like Gabriel. She wants Maria to be her replacement son and uses Maria’s sister as collateral for cooperation. Maria plays along for sixteen days.
Chloe has Maria’s sister look into the transplants at the hospital after noticing another missing man had a liver transplant. HIPAA is a thing, and the hospital can’t just release information on this type of thing. Detective Chloe decides to ask her sketchy booze cop to find out what he can about the donors on less ethical paths.
Noah gets a call that the donor for a new heart has come in for Maria, and time is of the essence. Maria pulls a knife and threatens to stab herself so Detective Sanchez can’t play house any longer.
The files come back, and Detective Chloe realizes that the donor was Detective Sanchez’s son. She calls for backup and rushes to Sanchez’s house. The cops pull weapons on one another. Detective Sanchez doesn’t admit to anything because she is a professional. Maria knocks her out and runs out into the street screaming for help.
Back up arrives, and Maria is reunited with her sister and her fiancé.
STRAY Thought
I’ve never wanted spaghetti more than watching this movie.
Why was Chloe pregnant? What did that add here?
This seemed really convoluted.
