Synopsis (via Lifetime)
After surviving a terrifying crash and being coerced into silence, a woman realizes the only way to escape is to stage her own death and disappear completely.
Recap/Wine Thoughts
Kelly is a baker who loves to put frosting on things! She gets into a flour fight with her sister, Dani. She reacts like she has been punched in the stomach when she is slapped with a spatula, maybe because she is dating an abusive guy named Derrick. (Derrick’s last girlfriend, Melissa, when over a bridge in a tragic “accident”)
Melissa’s brother, Mason, causes a scene outside the bakery and leaves some flyers about a candlelight vigil in her honor. Kelly decides to go because she is showing up to work with black eyes and needs to know what happened in Derrick’s past. Too bad Derrick has the same idea and shows up to speak about Melissa and the accident.
Derrick forces Kelly to go with him and takes her phone. He shows her where Melissa went over and promises to do the same to her, in fewer words. After essentially threatening her life, he proposes. Kelly is like, “Ummm, can I think about it?” (Wrong answer, girl!)
On a drive to talk, Derrick drives recklessly and crashes. Kelly wakes up and is being held captive by Derrick’s family, who run the town. They force her to sign an NDA, or they will bulldoze her bakery. Kelly signs and keeps her mouth shut, even when her sister Dani bursts into the house and asks, “WTF is going on?”
Kelly takes an impromptu camping trip with Derrick, leaving her sister to run the bakery. It sounds romantic, but since this is Lifetime, newly engaged couples in the woods never end well.
Dani gets a call that Kelly has been involved in a fatal accident, and when she gets to Derrick’s family house, he is sobbing. With no body, they presume Kelly fell off a cliff, like Melissa. Of course, Kelly has faked her own death and shows up at a diner in another small town, doing a terrible job hiding out.
Kelly takes up a self-defense class with a local hunk named Luke and gets a job at the diner as a baker, so much for being incognito. She doesn’t even wear a fake wig? What is this?!?!
Through flashbacks, we learn that Kelly tapped Mason, Melissa’s brother, to help her make her escape. She drugged Derrick and intentionally kept Dani in the dark to keep her sister safe. Faking her own death (using her blood from a blood bank) was her only way out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Kelly doesn’t cut off ties with her sister completely and chats with her on a baking forum. Dani is trying to run the business and grieve her sister. Derrick seizes the opportunity and swoops in to seduce Kelly’s sister. He lays on the charm thick and promises to always be there for Dani if she needs anything. (I’m confused about whether he’s genuinely charming or manipulating Dani because he thinks she knows something.)
Luke, the self-defense instructor, is also really persistent. Kelly is ready to train when she learns on the baking chat forum that Dani is going on a dinner date with Derrick. Kelly calls Mason to try and break them up. Dani isn’t ready to hear what Derrick is really like.
Mason is killed next for trying to warn Dani. Derrick confronts Dani and shows his true colors. He rages out and grabs Dani by the hair and slaps her across the face. Derrick starts running her life and uses her as bait because he knows Kelly is faking her death.
Kelly calls Mason and freaks out when Derrick answers; she comes clean to Luke and asks him to use his self-defense skills to save her sister. The town sheriff, Derrick’s brother, stops them, leaving Kelly to face Derrick for their final boss showdown.
Kelly stalls for time and gives Derrick a speech about wanting back the life they had together to get him close to her, so she can pull some fancy defense moves on his ass. Their stuff is randomly interrupted by Derrick’s mother. She is really running the show. Dani stabs Derrick while the real police drag the family away.
This twist felt unearned because we never really got enough time with this family, so who cares.
STRAY Thought
Hailey Duff is pretty self-assured as a director now.
