Synopsis (via Lifetime)

A devout Amish woman suspects foul play after her sister dies in a mysterious barn fire. Driven to protect her nephew, she starts to investigate her brother-in-law, despite the constraints of her close-knit community and its conservative traditions.

Recap/Wine Thoughts

Two men are having a tense conversation in a room, with one man expressing anger and frustration while the other listens intently.

An Amish man, Elie, is getting married to his “good helper,” Ida, and having flashbacks on his wedding day. He was in trouble on his rumspringa for drinking at bara and making out with ladies. He was shunned by the church and ends up punching himself in the face to tell a tall tale to get back in with his family.

Cut to Ida, who knows the Amish rules, debating them in church on behalf of her BFF, Sarah (Do they have those in Amish?) Elie returns, and Ida courts him and forgives him for his sins with the English. (You know, driving in a car and using electricity, oh, and hard drugs and sex.) He brings those back to Ida and is ready to roll in the hay. Ida just wants a parcel of land or whatever!

Elie goes into town to ask his friend for a clean blood test because he has gonorrhea. They are hinting at the fact that they might also be having a gay love affair?

A woman in traditional Amish attire engages in a serious conversation with a man in a rustic setting, with cows visible in the background.

After a year of marriage, Ida does all the housework and takes care of their baby. At the same time, Elie meets up with his “friend” for some Brokeback Mountain sexy time. Ida catches them; the timing is bad because she is pregnant again. Ida tells her sister/BFF that she thinks Elie is just using her for her family land. (Or he is just covering up his homosexuality.)

The Amish, of course, don’t believe in LGBTQ rights or even that it isn’t a choice. Elie’s parents admit that even as a boy, they knew he was differently different! They send him to conversion camp, or whatever the Amish equivalent of that is. (Just to be clear, conversion therapy is NOT medically sound and harmful to LGBTQ people.)

A woman in a green dress and white bonnet kneels beside a gravestone in a grassy cemetery, looking contemplative.

Elie set the barn on fire and killed Ida. Sarah knows this couldn’t be true, but steps in to help raise her children and live with Elie as a housekeeper and nanny. Ida communicates to Elie through the wind chimes and gets into his head. It’s like The Tell-Tale Heart, but with wind instruments!

These chimes are very prominent, and maybe they should just take them down because Elie is trippin!!!!!! He installs electricity and wants to take his son away. When Sarah confronts him, Elie grabs a knife and tells Sarah he will not marry her or any woman again. Then they run off in the night.

Elie lives a party lifestyle and lives with his boyfriend, who has an affinity for Tiger’s eye. The boyfriend left his family too. Ida’s ghost is there in, like, a transparent filter. So that is something!

A man and a young boy pose for a photo in front of a decorated Christmas tree. The man is wearing a dark jacket and the boy is dressed in a colorful sweater. A woman with a smartphone takes their picture.

Sarah learns that the Amish men have been in communication with Elie, and he is like, “It’s totally fine! I’m married to a woman.” He even sends a picture! The Amish men think Sarah is a wild woman and need a man to tame her.

Elie isn’t in a gay relationship after all, and I fabricated all that in my dumb little gay brain. Elie kills Glenn for calling him out for being a bad dad and definitely not low-key queer. Elie dumps the body and unknowingly leads the cops to his door from a flask with Glenn’s name in it. The police question Elie while Ghost Ida taunts him on the sidelines. It is slowly driving him insane and to murder his son?

A gravestone with the inscription 'Little Boy, Abandoned, Found in Texas' surrounded by toys, stuffed animals, and handmade notes in a grassy cemetery.

Sarah and Jacob search for Danny, and he is resting in an unmarked grave in Texas. Elie is arrested and charged with multiple murders. (Including his 9-year-old son.) He is put on trial and haunted by Ghost Ida in jail.

Years later, Elie is out of jail and still haunted by Ghost Ida until he dies of Parkinsons desisese. He is IRL the Amish Serial Killer.

STRAY Thought

Lifetime doesn’t do ghost stories often, so it was weird they chose to do the Amish Serial Killer as a ghost story.

There is a gay Amish story to be told; I will figure out how to write a treatment and pitch it to Jake Helgrin.
