Synopsis (via Lifetime)
After a car wreck temporarily robs Lauren Carlton of her memory right down to her name, she must piece together the details of the accident as they slowly return to her. When she finally remembers that she has a missing daughter, she must lead the police to the girl’s kidnappers.
Thoughts
Leah and her daughter, Sammi (Terrible child actor), are on a beach day trip. On their way back, they stop for gas. Leah’s ex, Dean, follows them. Leah frantically knees the gas station attendant in the groin and get away in time. Eventually, two masked figures find them and shoot out a tire, causing an accident. The masked people, who are hired by Dean for $100,000, knock Leah out, throw her in a car, and light it on fire. They make their getaway with Sammi in the backseat.
An officer pulls Leah from the wreckage and finds a backpack full of money. Lean wakes up and doesn’t remember anything or even who she is. The officer renames her Jane… Jane Doe. (VERY original.) They hold her in jail with a lawyer named Rick
Justin and Danielle, the masked people, take Sammi to a motel and meets with Dean. Dean tries to save his daughter, but the criminals hold her hostage for more money.
The police run Leah’s prints and locate Dean. (Apparently, she was in a car crash before. Dean tells her she was drunk driving and killed her daughter.) He tells them that Leah is his wife and their daughter died two years ago. He is gaslighting her and makes up a whole story about her father being dead so he can have her to himself. Leah is still on house arrest for some reason, but Dean takes off the ankle bracelet. (Lindsay Lohan would never.)
Leah is shellshocked, but about halfway through the movie, she starts doing some research online. Leah knows that her daughter is alive and calls Rick over to talk. Rick tells Leah that Dean is in financial ruin. They drive around and speak to the dry cleaner who corroborates Dean’s story. (The dry cleaner was helping Dean launder five million dollars. Eyeroll.) Then a shootout happens randomly.
Rick looks into Dean’s background some more and tells Leah to keep pretending that everything is fine. She continues to do research online while holding a huge butcher knife. They discover the money-laundering scheme. Leah tries to run away, but Dean drugs her with sleeping pills. Then Jason shows up and takes her away by rewiring the ankle bracelet. When Leah wakes up, he tells her that he was hired to kill her. He sends her and her car careening off a cliff. Rick saves her, and they hug. I love Rick. Leah magically gets her memory back.
An amber alert is issued for Sammi. Justin wants to kill the girl because it is apparent that they will not get their money. Danielle tries to stop him, but he leaves her at a gas station and takes Sammi. He takes her to the beach and has a tough time killing the child. Danielle turns in Justin, and the police arrest him. They cry VERY dramatically.
Dean has Sammi and calls Leah insisting they meet alone. He plans to kill Leah and make it look like a suicide. He has a life insurance policy on Leah for a million dollars. As all this is going down, Sammi just sits there coloring and is the worst. The kid runs away when Leah grabs Dean’s gun and shoots him like 20 times. The police show up a bit too late. Rick hugs Leah and I’m in love with him. So is Leah and they raise Sammi together. The end!
Side Note
Minority Report: Danielle, Police Officer, dry cleaner and his mom, motel owner,
William McNamara is SUPER over the top here. I love it and hate it at the same time.
