Synopsis (via Lifetime)
A group of popular private school girls enter a most regal and respected Debutante pageant for a chance to win the coveted crown. Competition turns sinister when things go too far in this thriller, Deadly Debutantes. (2021)
Recap/Wine Thoughts
The movie begins with old footage of actual debutantes in their cut with shimmer tiaras, which is precisely the type of camp I am looking for.
Anna, the popular girl who has everything, is shopping for debutante dresses with Diana’s micromanaging mother. (Who was a belle of the ball back in her day.)
Meanwhile, nerdy Sophia is home studying and craving Greek yogurt. She is a teacher’s pet and is clueless about the whole debutante thing. A teacher encourages Sophia to enter the ball and earn a full college scholarship to her dream school!!! This teacher is a surrogate mother figure because Sophia’s mother recently passed away.
Anna throws a party while her parents are away at a lake house. Her boyfriend Kenny is looking forward to the alone time, but the power suddenly goes out. Anna is so scared that she calls her parents and thinks that the person who cut the power could be a criminal that her father prosecuted.
Sophia is a fish out of water; even so, Anna is threatened and tells her that she is surprised to see Sophia. The event organizer is clear about addressing problematic issues at debutante balls and insists that they are welcoming to EVERYONE.
Anna decides to improve her essay entry and calls a nerd named Marvin to write it for her. In exchange, she will give him Billie Eilish tickets AND backstage passes. (Damn, I’ll write her paper.) While Anna is busy on the phone, someone spray-paints “Drop Out!” on the garage door.
Blaire, the overly involved teacher in Sophia’s life, assigns her as Kenny’s private tutor. She also volunteers to read the essays and notices that Marvin plagiarized his own essay. Anna gets reported and is given a second chance. (Blaire is pissed and thinks that it is unfair.) Anna tells her friend Mia to give her the essay she wrote in exchange for a faux leather coat.
Anna gets to school and sees “Bitch” scrawled on her locker. Then, while she is studying in the library, a scream is heard. Someone pushed Mia off the roof, and she was wearing Anna’s jacket. Someone is targeting Anna because they slash her tires. Anna isn’t frazzled and doubles down on her efforts to win the debutante ball. (Even though Sophia wins the essay contest.)
Anna sets up a meeting with Sophia and accuses her of scaring her out of the competition. She also says that Sophia is using her dead mother to garner sympathy votes AND stealing Kenny. Sophia says she is not trying to steal anything from Anna and may the best woman win. Anna tries to bribe Sophia, but she gets turned down hardcore. Anna leaves the meeting and is almost run over by a car.
CUE THE HOT DOCTOR! At the hospital, Anna visits Mia, who looks fine. Blaire is also in the hospital. Anna is gaslit AF and is sure that Sophia is the one out to get her. Anna hires a PI and is attacked in the parking garage by a man. Well, he is a good Samaritan trying to tell Anna that her car has been towed. Anna continues to freak out about Sophia, and her mother is over it. Anna says she will win the competition or die trying.
A scene of getting ready for the Debutante ball happens, including a moment of putting on gloves. (Oh, and pulling out a gun mysteriously.)
At the ball, Kenny comes clean about calling the tow truck on the car. Anna knows that Sophia isn’t behind the scare tactics.
It has been Blaire, the teacher, the whole time. When Sophia’s father is onto Blaire, she knocks him down the stairs with a stanchion to the face.
Blaire kidnaps Anna and forces her outside with the gun. Blaire was a legacy, too, and Anna’s mom stole the title from her. This has all been an act of revenge. Anna calls Kenny so he can hear the confession. Kenny is worthless and just runs around looking for Anna until he is shot by Blaire point-blank. I thought Anna was going to scream, “YOU KILLED KENNY!”
Anna’s mom saves her daughter and apologizes for not believing her. Blaire is taken away in a police car.
Nicole wins the debutante, and that feels right because she deserved it. Nicole stayed out of the DRAMA!
