Synopsis (via Hallmark)
Two old friends from high school work together over Christmas to sell his uncle’s Mexican bakery, famous for its magical gingerbread cookies that grant wishes. Starring Merritt Patterson and Jon Ecker.
Recap/Wine Thoughts
The movie starts with… a baking montage. Obviously.
Maya lives with her parents and loves baking and jogging. Her parents are starting an event planning business and tell her that the owner, Luis, is SELLING THE BAKERY!!! (Never heard of this, but I will wish on Gingerbread from now on.) Maya talks to the bakery owner and wishes on Gingerbread.
Alex is going through a breakup on his birthday! He is the nephew of the baker owner and knows Maya from when they used to work at the bakery together as teens. Maya adds insult to injury and tells Alex that Luis is selling the bakery. Alex suggests that HE help find the buyer.
Maya doesn’t want to work with Alex because she left a love note in Alex’s apron and left for Paris. He never responded to her love note, so she stopped pursuing him and even made up a fake boyfriend! (George glass, who?)
A new hunk/interested buyer shows up named Jac. He is from downtown Denver and owns a french pastry shop. Alex is threatened by the new french hunk in town. He doesn’t want to mess up his relationship with Maya since he is such a “failure” in relationships. (Seriously, this guy is so hot it is impossible he has been heartbroken.)
Alex cooks Maya a meal, and they talk about their jobs and lives. They really connect.
Then a gingerbread house relay happens. It is a cute and fun update on the typical holiday traditions Hallmark depicts.
More gingerbread wishes happen. Alex cooks angrily as Maya goes out on dates with Jac. (Well, she is just dropping off papers while she is in Denver.) Alex gives Maya a gingerbread cookie for Jac to wish on. He wishes for “the bakery of his dreams.”
Alex admits to Maya that he got the letter years ago. He couldn’t say anything to her because Maya was going on about her fake boyfriend. They realize they both have feelings for one another and have had them the whole time. It seems silly to have wasted so much time. They talk about kissing but decide not to because they don’t want to do long distances.
At the big Christmas party (or whatever at the bakery), Maya finds Alex’s briefcase, matching the cookie she made a wish on. COINCIDENCE?
Alex decides to take over the bakery, and Jac doesn’t want to buy it anyway. The men come to an understanding leaving Maya and Alex to work out their relationship.
