Recap/Wine Thoughts
Laurel and her husband Will are trying to have a child while taking care of her injured Nana They decide to hire a caregiver to help around the holidays. They have trouble finding someone so last minute.
That is until Gloria Merkel unexpectedly shows up. She is on another frequency, and Helen is not interested in having a caregiver. She asks for Gloria’s references and is surprised when Gloria pulls stacks of them out of her purse. (Like Mary Poppins.) Laurel talks Will into taking Gloria in and gives her the tour of the house.
Nana/Helen doesn’t get along with Gloria and calls Laurel claiming Gloria is stealing things. Laurel asks her Grandmother to chill out.
Will gets stopped on the street by his adoption agent. There is a new foster child available if Will and Laurel are interested, he quickly agrees. The last child they fostered, named Johnathan, was taken away and placed back into custody with his mother. It was heartbreaking for the couple. Will wants to bring it up to Laurel, but he is afraid to upset her.
Things take a turn for the better when Nana/Helen sees the car that Ms. Merkel drives. It is the same car Helen’s husband drove when they were first dating. Helen begins to open up and tells Mrs. Merkel about Johnathan and the heartbreak the couple has suffered. They decide to work together to help Laurel move forward.
While decorating the Christmas Tree, Gloria connects with Laurel and brings up Johnathan. (She wastes no time cutting to the heart of the matter.) Gloria also shares that she lost a child too soon. Will and Laurel go on a date night while Gloria and Nana decorate the house extravagantly.
Laurel reconnects with her father, who abandoned her when she was only six years old. He brings a sentimental but ugly angel. Nana thinks that Gloria is an angel and tries to tell Laurel, who doesn’t believe.
A kid’s Christmas recital happens, and it is too much cuteness for me.
Will has a work White Elephant party, and he receives baby announcement cards. This freaks him out, and he talks to Gloria about the signs he has been experiencing, validating that he and Laurel should be a parent. Gloria listens, and so does Laurel, from around the corner! Later, Gloria tells Laurel that Helen and will are “moving into the sunshine” and encourages her to join them.
Laurel gets a call from the adoption agency about a newborn who needs a foster home. Laurel is confused and tells the woman she is mistaken; they are not ready to take in a child. Will finds Laurel and apologizes, but she is angry with him for putting her in that position. She is afraid to lose another child to the system. They decide to take a break from their relationship.
Nana and Gloria try to console a heartsick Laurel. They tell her to love Johnathan and then let him go to make room for a new child in her heart. Gloria shares that even though she only had her daughter for 19 years, she would do it again in a heartbeat. Laurel takes the advice and forgives Will after thanking him for never giving up on her. Even in her darkest moments.
At Midnight Mass, Laurel and Will bond with a neighbor who also fosters children.
On Christmas Day’s Mrs. Merkel shares a quilt that she made with Nana with sentimental value. Will and Laurel get a call about fostering a six-year-old girl, the same age Laurel was when she lost her mother.
Flash to three years later, Will and Laurel open Christmas Presents with their kids Kelly and Bobby. Nana is there too, of course.
Mrs. Merkel is off to her next family, like Super Nanny!
