Synopsis (via Lifetime)
A big-city veterinarian falls for a small-town doctor when he sets out to recreate a New York City Christmas in her Vermont hometown (2021)
Recap/Wine Thoughts
Scarlet is an in-demand Veterinarian who speaks French and is a single mother. Scarlet and her son Milo head to Vermont for Christmas via train.
When Scarlet arrives in town, she goes all medicine woman and helps birth a baby calf. She stops by the convenience store and bumps into a handsome man; they argue over the last box of Frosted Flakes. He tells her he is tired from working an overnight shift as a doctor, and she tells him she is a doctor too. His name is Josh Foster, and he is a friend of Scarlet’s father.
Scarlet gets another call to help an animal in need and drives through freezing rain to… John Foster’s house. His dog is lethargic after accidentally eating icing. She gets stuck at his house because of the storm, so they drink coffee and wait it out. Scarlet talks about her son and the husband she lost eight years ago around Christmas.
Scarlet and John decorate cakes and talk about New York City to kill even more time during the storm. John is originally from NYC, and they have a lot in common. Nothing is like Christmas in New York, unless your movie budget can’t afford it and you’re filming in Canada pretending to be Vermont.
Once the storm subsides, Scarlet invites John to watch Miracle on 34th St while eating parmesan popcorn.
Milo is suddenly in a kid production, and we see the show. People mistake John and Scarlet for a couple. Scarlet doesn’t know how it would work between them, but she does like Josh.
To give Scarlet her New York Christmas, he recreates Rockefeller Center for her, and they go ice skating, well, roller skating, actually. (Look, it is Vermont, and Josh can’t work miracles.) Josh tells Scarlet that she should move home to be with him, and she is offended, as she has every right to be. Scarlet has worked hard building her life in New York. She doesn’t want to give everything up for a feeling.
Scarlet talks to her father, who tells her that she doesn’t have to do everything alone. She has created a great life for her and Milo, but she should let others in.
John apologizes for being presumptuous and decorates a tree for her. They kiss and are interrupted by meowing. She has a box of kittens to deliver, the furry part of this move. Scarlet tells her family that she is ready to leave New York and come home. John and Scarlet kiss, and then everyone hugs and celebrates being together for the holidays. Yay for them!
Side Note
The title is misleading; it really wasn’t about animals as much as I thought it would be, which is a good thing.
