When thieves rob the garage sale of suburban mom Marcia, a struggle ensues, and one of the thieves is killed. Unbeknownst to Marcia, the dead thief’s lover returns, masquerading as a kind neighbor – with a vengeful plan to destroy Marcia’s life.
Recap/Wine Thoughts
The movie starts at a Garage Sale. (As promised.) When a young woman asks a creepy-looking man to see inside his house, it turns creepy. He takes her to his bedroom and shows her his mother’s lamp. The woman rubs the lamp until she hears a commotion outside. A young hunk steals the cash box and runs away. He turns out to be the brother of the young woman, Trudee. They rob Garage Sales for petty cash, which is a lame crime.
Marcia is throwing her 5th garage sale this year. (Which is against the HOA rules.) Macia asks her daughter, Candice, to blast it on social media. It works and gets Trudee and her brother, Pete, to their home. Trudee tries to distract Marcia, while Pete steals jewelry upstairs. Marcia sees Pete in the window and rushes to stop him from robbing them. They get into an altercation, and Pete is sent tumbling down the stairs to his death. Trudee is stunned and leaves the scene.
A hot cop shows up and questions Marcia and Candice. He tells her next time someone robs the house, just let them go instead of second-degree murdering them.
Four months later, Trudee decides to return to the garage sale and fantasizes about killing Marcia. She actually befriends her and becomes Marcia’s thrifting buddy. They have dinner together, and Marcia opens up about quitting her job and is barely staying afloat financially. (Which is why she has been having all the garage sales.) Candace finally lays down the law with her mother, asking her to stop the garage sale thing and get a real job. (Marcia is kind of a hoarder.)
Trudee helps Candace organize her mother’s back bedroom and finds a list of passwords on a sheet of paper.
Marcia meets a handsome/so rich retired early man named Rick at another one of her yard sales, who buys $300 worth of Christmas decorations. He asks her out on a dinner date. Candace approves, but Trudee doesn’t want Marcia to have any happiness in her life.
While Marcia and her date are hooking up, Trudee breaks in and hacks into Marcia’s accounts. While leaving Trudee knocks some stuff over, and Rick searches the house with a bat. Trudee grabs a knife and almost stabs Rick, but stops herself because they work together to get Marcia’s money. (Or lack thereof.) They clean out her savings.
Rick is Trudee and Peter’s father. He thinks the job is done since they cleaned out Marcia’s savings, but Trudee wants more revenge.
Marcia mourns the loss of Candace’s college fund and all her savings. She is upset that she let Rick con her, even if the sex was good.
Things get worse when Evelyn from the HOA shuts down Marcia’s garage sale, and Candace defends her mother by physically pushing Evelyn. Trudee seizes the opportunity to kill Evelyn with some scissors and frames, Candace for the murder.
Hot cop returns to question Candace and Marcia about the murder of Evelyn when he matches Candace’s fingerprints to one matched on the murder weapon, Candace runs. She is arrested and is facing serious charges.
Marcia asks a former co-worker to be her lawyer. The lawyer says that it doesn’t look good, and Candace will be lucky to get 25 years with parole. Marcia talks to her daughter on zoom jail, and Candace maintains her innocence.
Trudee offers to help pay for Marcia’s mortgage and clean the place up to get it ready to sell. When Trudee sees the spot where her brother died, she is triggered and asks Marcia if she pushed him. Marcia admits that he didn’t stop him from slipping and thinks he deserved to die because he had it coming. Of course, Marcia is trying to provoke Trudee into slipping up.
Marcia follows Trudee and sees that she is meeting up with Rick. She takes pictures of them together to give to the Hot Cop. Then she sneaks into the house to record their conversation; she is dumb. The phone goes off, and Marcia is held hostage and forced to sign her house to them. Then Rick and Trudee argue about killing Marcia.
The police show up before Trudee can saw Marcia in half because Marcia was live-streaming the whole thing. Marcia throws a trash can at Trudee, and then the cops arrest her.
Candace is released from jail and asks her mom what she wants to do to celebrate, Marcia suggests going to a garage sale, and Candace screams, “Noooo!” Silly ending. Silly movie.
