When teenager Maggie makes a new friend in the cool, edgy Laurel, she’s thrilled. But Maggie soon realizes she’s being groomed for something much worse than a best friend, and it’s up to her mother Kate to save her. Ren Ashton, Nicolette Langley, Rachel Turner Pusey and Philip Boyd star. (2021)
Recap/Wine Thoughts
A man chases Maggie through the middle of the night, and a gunshot goes off.
Three weeks earlier, Maggie and her mother, Kate, move to a new town after her father’s death.
Kate opens the town bakery, and Maggie starts at a new school and runs into Kurt, a cute boy, and a popular blonde girl named Laurel. Laurel takes Maggie under her wing and assures her that she isn’t into Kurt and likes “older guys,” NOT high school boys. (She seems to be in some kind of trouble and living a double life.)
Laurel is a bad influence on Maggie, skipping school to go shopping for a party outfit and then stealing clothing from the store. They are followed by a man in sunglasses and a hat.
A girl named Bridget warns Maggie about Laurel and says that she is dangerous. Her last best friend, Grace Martin. Maggie starts to think Bridget might be right, when a car slowly follows her from school.
Laurel takes Maggie to a nightclub instead of Kurt’s lame high school party. Her friend, a handsome man, named Dan, lets the underage girls into the VIP section where they dance and do shots. Laurel encourages Maddie to drink more and tries to pawn her off on older men at the club. She gives out her social media handles to Dan.
Drunkenly Maggie comes home with a new purse, a wad of cash, and a bad attitude. Kate grounds Maggie and lays down the law, but Maggie laughs at her mother and calls her neglectful.
Kurt continues to pursue Maggie, but she spends her time with Laurel. (Who is a high-maintenance friend.) The girls continue to go out to clubs, and Dan welcomes Maggie. He introduces her to guys from “Stalford,” a college she wants to go to. Then the Lifetime Bob plays “I’m just a girl pretending to be nice! So Dangerous inside, And I want to stop!.”
Someone takes photos of Maggie undressing with a telephoto lens. Maggie searches for Grace Martin online, who went missing from a gentlemen’s club, and her death has ruled a suicide.
Kate goes shopping because she wants to start dating again and runs into Laurel and her daughter, skipping class. Kate tells Laurel to stay away from her daughter.
Laurel is confronted by Dan, who aggressively screams at her for losing the target. Then he attacks Kurt in a park. Kurt gets put in the hospital, and when he is released, he tells Maggie that he was only in the park because she left him.
Photos of Maggie appear on an online escort service, and she gets into a car with Laurel to find out what is going on. They go to the club, but are stopped by Kate who who tracks her daughter’s cellphone and brings her home.
Maggie starts ignoring Laurel at school and is done hanging out with her. Laurel tells Maggie that she is in way over her head with Dan and warns her that Dan will hurt her. Maggie tells Laurel to go to the police.
Maggie is sent photos of her mother as a threat and an address. Maggie shows up and is expected to be with a client sexually, but she knees him in the balls and runs away. Dan pressures Laurel to get Maggie back.
Kate’s bakery co-owner, Amiee, starts to figure out who Laurel really is and calls to warn her co-worker. Then she is attacked at the bakery. Kate sees the missed calls and rushes to help her friend. She calls a detective, who seems to not be interested.
Meanwhile, Maggie is kidnapped in her sleep by Dan with some chloroform. When she wakes up, Dan admits to attacking Kurt and Amiee. Maggie tries to get herself untied and call for help. Both her and Laurel are locked in a hotel room. Dan isn’t having that and pistol whips, Laurel and Maggie. Then he drives them to the woods while they are unconscious.
The detective finds out Dan is involved in a sex ring and uses the hotel for meet-ups. Kate uses this information and tracks Maggie’s cellphone.
She finds her daughter tied up in the woods and unties her. Then she rushes to save Laurel and stop Dan. Kate gets into a struggle with Dan, and Laurel grabs the gun, shooting Dan.
Kate starts dating a new guy named Mark and Maggie dates Kurt. They all share a toast and laugh until Laurel shows up. Maggie forgives Laurel and Kate gives her a job at THE BAKERY?!?! ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?!
